Should the repayment of student loans be abolished?

Why don't we just give them accomodation, free books and equipment without making them carry round a millstone of debt for several years?

Update:

mummy fi: Are you saying that those from poor backgrounds should be stopped from taking further education?

And would some of you read the edit bit under the Q before sounding off,

I'm on about the repayment of the loans, not the abolishment of students services.

Most definately YES Otherwise it is going back to having the rich kids in with a chance in life Whilst we poor peasants take years to pay it back .Especially if you are going for a job in the so called caring industry which pays so little

No, because educated people don't want to live in a communist state.

There has never been a time when students had free education or books. When there was a student grant it barely covered accomodation.

Today's students spend twice as much as they need to live on and would certainly not accept the kind of accomodation that was on offer when I was a student.

If all the dumbed down courses were scrapped, then I would accept that there is a good arguement for abolishing tuition fees.

Hi LBJ - remember the olden days? Well actually the 60's? Students had a free education and free accomodation, free books and basic equipment and if they couldn't afford what they required there were lots of social funds to apply to. Not many youngsters could go to uni as the standards were so high - today the uni's would be over-run and the standards far lower. No child born in this country should have to pay for an education but all of those wanting to come here from abroad should pay and very highly.

  • Get rid of Student Loans & go back to the better system of Student Grants ! What is the point of burdening those people who have the talent that this fine country needs to make it so much better than it is at present ! By lumbering them with massive debt for years to come will this country (people & the economy etc.) ever see the benefit that these talented people can nurture & grow for the rest of their lives & for the generations of people to come in the future ! If I saw that I was going to have a massive 'millstone' of debt around my neck for years to come then I would not follow that particular pathway in my life & I would do something else with my life ! In doing this the potential to develop myself is lost to myself, my family, my friends & the country etc. ! Invest in the future & invest in the children/teenagers of today with Student Grants as they are the future of this world tomorrow !

the system in great Britain is very unfair.

my brother just because he lived in England has been lumbered with a huge debt because he was smart enough to go to Canterbury university.

my cousin on the other hand who lived in Scotland got a free university education despite studying in Bristol.

abolish this 2 tier system where depending on where you live you get free education or start working adult life in debt

i notice the new labour mps ( jack straw, David blunkett, tony Blair etc) benefited in the 1960s from a free uni education yet they now don't want people to have the same.

basically have a country wide scheme everybody in the UK should be treated the same pay for uni or get it free

why are the Scots being treated better than the English?

you have two immediate options, call sallie mae and request another deferment or a forbearance. forbearance is essentially financial hardship. you are asking the lender for leniency because you are unable to make your expected payments. a forbearance is different from a deferment in that it is not an option that your lender is obligated to grant you as a deferment would be. 3 things might result with a forbearance. they might say no, pay what you owe monthly. or they might reduce the amount you're required to pay monthly or they might put off repayment for an unspecific amount of time and revisit that option later on.

hmmmm, so you want to abolish student loans. that doesn't seem like a very good idea. there aren't nearly enough scholarships for everyone that doesn't have the money for college. without student loans, they would have to spend 10 years working their way through school. many people do this anyway.....but why would you want to take the choice away?

It's funny, you want to take away the debt that they freely chose....at the expense of the education that they were willing to incure debt to achieve. where's the sense in that?

if people want education they should pay for it...they are the ones that will be in better paid jobs in the future anyway....if it was just the money or the courses then meybe but i know what students spend a lot of money on and im not willing to help pay for it. ive got a good job and i didnt go to uni, i paid for an open uni course when i was older and was more than happy to pay for it

NB, and in reply to the question, no im not saying poorer backgrounds cant access higher education, they can get a job just as everyone else who pays for their own fees. I never made a remark in my answer about poorer people.

My partner has just finished Uni. He has to start paying back his loan when he gets a job (soon I hope !)

He has just tried to sign on only to be told he is not eligible for any unemployment benefit as he has not paid enough contributions. This is a man that spent 4 years in Papua New Guinea as a volunteer and always worked before he did that and paid contributions. 4 years at Uni and in debt before they start, it's about time it was abolished.
