When I travel between the US and Switzerland I usually end up with at least one 4 to 5 hour layover. I take a backpack with me. In it I keep a couple small snacks, two books, my gameboy and at least 2 different games, spare batteries, a deck of cards, and whatever other small light items I think I might want. In my experience, it really pays off to have a variety of things to do.

Play with your laptop or get a good book. Enjoy your time in Spain I have been there twice and it's a great place to visit and the nightlife in Madrid is just great.
