IF the Celts win what does that mean for "western conference superiority?"?

If the Celts win, that's 3 titles for the east in the past 5 years. And the Celts beat quite a few Western conference teams to get there. Does this sway anyone's opinion of the West being so dominant?

I understand that the west has better players and teams, but if they don't win championships, are they that much superior?

Update:

The East won 6 (out of 10)championships in the 80s, 6 (out of 10) in the 90s and they currently won 3 out of 7 so far in the 2000's.

Update 2:

@ Kevin

Billups was back to full strength in game 6. Explain how Boston beat Detroit if Boston wasn't a REAL contendor...

@ Mark J

How isn't winning championships enough to prove they are a contending conference? 15 out of the last 27 championships have come the East's way. I agree that the 9tha nd 10th best teams in the West would be # 4 or #5 in the East, but if the East's number 1 team beats the West's number one team, doesn't that prove they "belong"?

Update 3:

@phatboy

You're missing the point. It's not ONE win. It's multiple wins over multiple years. I don't think the East is superior. I think the exact opposite. BUT I don't think the West DOMINATES. If they were dominant (like the NFL was over the AFL) then the East wouldn't win championships. My point is that the East does win championships...and are therefore not as outclassed as some people would have you believe.

Update 4:

@fps_dean

I don't think you give Cleveland enough credit. They went to the finals last year and could beat many of the Western teams that made the playoffs on a consistant basis. But I do like your argument and I think you're right abotu why the East is overlooked.

    I dont get all this "west confrence domniance" garbage. The only team from the West to win a Title since 03 has been the Spurs, 3 times, while the East has had the Pistons and Heat, and possibly the Celtics.

    The Lakers and Spurs are the only teams that have won Finals from the West since 2000.

    The Western Confrence doesnt dominate, the Lakers and Spurs do. And if the East is so weak, how come the Celtics were pushed to 7 games twice and as soon as they got to the Finals they shredded the Lakers in the first 2 games, even though they were the supposed underdogs? Everyone knew the Lakers were going to win last nights game, and they barley did too. Celts will win in no more than 6 games.

    And for the person who said no East teams have futures like the Jazz, Hornets, Blazers and Lakers, thats a lie. What about the Cavs when LeBron really shows what he'll be able to do? And the Magic? Dwight Howard is only going to get more dominant. Derrick Rose will almost certainly end up on an Eastern team, and the Hawks, the leagues youngest team, already pushed the Celtics to 7 games. Couple that with the return of Dwayne Wade and Gilbert Arenas next season, and the East is defintiley going to be the dominant confrence in the next decade.

    All the West's best stars are old and dont have more than 5 years left. Tim Duncan, Steve Nash, Dirk, Shaq, Jason Kidd, Kobe, Manu Ginobili, Allen Iverson, Pau Gasol and Tracy McGrady. The East's best players are all young, like LeBron, Wade, Bosh, Howard, and Derrick Rose. East will be dominant in the next decade.

    The dominance of the West over the East isn't shown through the top 2 teams, where they are pretty even. It is shown through teams 3-10, where the Warriors almost won 50 games and still ended up the 9th seed and not in the playoffs. Meanwhile, the Hawks make the playoffs with a sub-.500 record.

    I think the East is improving, but the West is still going to be dominant in the imminent future. No teams in the East have the future of teams like the Hornets, Lakers, Jazz, and Blazers.

    I wouldn't say that the East would be taking over. The 9th and 10th best teams in the West would probably be top 4 in the East. After last years draft 2 teams will be getting better in the next year or two, Portland and Seattle. New Orleans, Los Angeles (Lakers), Utah are all very young and should be good for quite some time. The East still has a ways to go, but it would be awesome if they caught up sooner rather than later.

    I think the Western Conference is a tougher conference (a lot of good teams). The Celtics have a very nice team but it also is only 2-1 in the series (if the C's take a game in LA...ok I'll think a title is a chance).

    The conference (Western) was tougher to get out of than the East. Only the Pistons were REAL contenders and with Billups hurting...they didn't really have a chance!

    I dislike the Lakers with a passion. I hope they lose! Kobe Bryant molested a girl and he's back on the court. Anyone else would be in jail! Anyways, Garnett and Pierce can't play THAT bad three more games? Can they!

    The western conference has like 4 teams with a good chance to make the finals, and all 8 of them are good enough to be able to make a decent run.

    The eastern conference has two teams that are on the same level and a lot of weak teams. The 3-8 seeds basically aren't going anywhere in the postseason...

    There still are more good teams in the west, which is simply why people overlook the east.

    come on now. i mean lakers appear to lack the "killer instinct" as a team but they have THE preeminent killer in the league on the team. lakers have a tendency to play to the level of the competition. when they play their game, they are way too much offense for any team. the nuggets are good and are playing well as of late, but that's sometimes fool's gold. the nuggets hadn't been past the first round since like 95 til this year and the lakers were in the finals last year. lakers have the experience and will be able to taste a championship berth being so close to the finals and they will step up. seriously tho every time someone suggests the lakers will lose cuz someone is playing them competitively, the lakers step it up a notch and make it pretty clear. the nuggets have a great team no doubt but the lakers have repeatedly proven they can beat them this season. it will be interesting to watch but i think the nuggets will get rattled in the WCF since they haven't really been challenged all playoffs.

    The East will have to do more than win a championship every once in a while to be considered superior over the west. The last time the east was truly superior was when MJ and the Bulls won all those championships.

    If the Celtics do win, it doesn't mean the west is weak. There might have been a team in the west that was better suited to the Celtics game than LA was. The spurs would have been fun to watch, as they play similar games. One win by the east doesn't mean a darn thing.

  • 1 decade ago

    It will still be that way because Garnett and Allen both came from the western conference, the eastern conference wouldn't be winning withouth raiding the west and buying an all-star team.

    The Lakers/Spurs era is over (those two teams can go to hell by the way) The east will now dominate.. Celts in 5!!!
