Do you see a connection between religion and spam?

Not the meat-product.

The spam that's like "If you don't send this to X amount of people you will be murdered tonight..." etc.

People know its implausible, but look at how much those messages spread around the internet! They instill fear in people, and they have a mechanism of spreading.

I just want to hear others thoughts on this, because I think that the Abrahamic religions are so widespread because their doctrines are contagious. Once people hear them they're enticed into staying faithful, they expect a reward, an afterlife, and they have an omnipotent being to be both feared and befriended. Its like an extremely effective contagious thought trap, despite the fact that its founded upon purely irrational concepts.

Does anybody else feel the same way? Does anybody think that's nonsense? I'd like opinions from both sides, so fire away.

We are to put nothing, zip, between 'me and thee'. Nothing in the world is more important than God.

There has always been this kind of foolery. Consider the fisherman with his pole and lures. For all those that are not in the know, they will be had for dinner. It is our own responsibility to stay focused and maintain an 'airtight' relationship with the Lord so absolutely nothing can penetrate a weakness in your stronghold. To be sure, if there is, the negative forces will find it!

I can see your point. We all want to think that this life isn't all there is, that there is some reward for doing the right things, that someone loves and accepts us for who we are, that we can have help in becoming a better person, etc.

People do things because they work. There are obviously some human needs that religion meets very well.

    Not the meat-product.

    Pity.

I was going to make a comment about Spam is fry-able, and from I know of the Beliefs of the Religious, it seems many of them are also going to prove to be fry-able.

There is definitely a connection when it comes to

" Do as I say or something bad will happen"

It is called controlling by fear, nasty isn't it?

Interesting thought - and both prey on people's superstitions and have unfounded anecdotes to prove they are 'true'.
