This is an added extra that everyone needs. I thought, many years ago "what the heck, why should I have all that medical, I could use the cash" Then day, putting in a tile floor, I worked late, came home with the worst back I ever had, I started out of my truck and the lights went out.
To make short, I had four crushed vertebrae and three disc's that were no longer there, the hospital bill was 98 K and the doctors was 68 K it took fifteen years, many phone calls and begging not to be turned in when a payment was missed.
Believe me, it's better to have the insurance then without.

One of the reasons that I got and held on to a government job for 22 years was to have medical insurance that was somewhat affordable. Prices for medical care, even with insurance, are hard to manage. Wish basic medical care was available to all at reasonable prices, but it isn't.

It's expensive, but necessary. My husband carries our insurance through his work. He hates his job, but he can't leave because of the insurance.
I am looking at hip replacement surgery in a couple months. Our out of pocket is $2,500. Without the insurance, the surgery with the doctors would be about $65,000. And that's if everything goes according to plan.
Prescriptions are what kill us. We try to get generic wherever possible, but it isn't always.

I am fortunate in that I have Medicare, and as I worked for a company for 19 years, I was able to stay on their health ins. program. If you are over 50 - NO SHOULD BE WITHOUT HEALTH INSURANCE. I recently had tests run - total charge at hospital wa $4,940+++ - just shy of $5,000. My cost was $8.64. The Dr's bill was $249.00 - my cost $25.00
To read my test results and exrays = $200+ - my cost $10.00.
I would have to file bankruptcy if I did not have insurance. CJ

No one should be without it unless they can afford to pay the horrendously high cost of medical care. Unfortunately, sometimes the cost of insurance is more than some can afford. I'm all for the government helping those who are doing what they can to take care of themselves but still can't afford it.

We all need to have some kind of medical insurances ? if you have a job that has good medical and you decide to leave that job ...Keep the medical.... pay the premiums..... It's cheaper to keep it then to be without it.....You never want to be without medical insurances.....

I think it is a necessity if it's affordable. I'm very lucky and my husband has excellent coverage without any payroll deductions. I wish this could be possible for all citizens.

I don't have any, I need it, and I can't afford it. I'm to young for medicare and unable to work a job that provides insurance.
