What do you do about an ex employees creditors that keep calling his previous employer?
We fired a guy 2 months ago, and are still getting phone calls from an unknown creditor, who refuses to stop calling. A number does not pop up on caller id, and when they are told he no longer works here, they either hang up, or argue, and ask for another number. I'm not sure how to proceed. I can't get them to give me their supervisor, or a phone number so I can report them to the A.G. Any other advice???
Thank you, so far good advice! I appreciate it! I am going to use both incorporated the next time they call. They have called 4 times today. The first time I simply hung up and they immediately called back. My boss has talked to them a few times, but it doesn't seem to phase them. I have asked if they wanted me to fax something stating he does not work here, and a request for them to stop calling, but have not been able to get a number out of them yet, or been able to speak to a supervisor. The man actually said if I give them another number they will stop, and I told him I don't have another number...Next time they call, probably later on today, I will tell him if he will give me a contact number maybe I can contact the ex employee and hopefully get them in contact with one another!

I wish people would read the question before offering advice, namely where you mention the creditor comes up as unknown and you are unable to get their number. The creditor (or whoever they sold your ex employee's debt to for collections) is hoping you'll get fed up and give them the ex employee's number. When I've had this happen, I say, look...he doesn't work here anymore. I can't get in touch with him. You guys call constantly, which is a waste of both our time. Please take me off your list, and I'm hanging up now.
After 5 or 6 times of doing this, the calls do stop, but will probably start up again months later once that creditor sells his account to one even further down on the ladder. Good luck, but it's tough when you have a loser that used to be at your number.
However, here's a sneakier thing you can try: next time they call, tell them you cannot legally give them the employee's number, but you will contact the employee and have them call the creditor back. See if the creditor will give you a contact number. When they do, wait until they call again and tell them to stop calling and take you off their list, which they are legally required to do. Then you can have a number to report to the FTC.

Contact your company's internal communications department - maybe they can trace the phone call or find it on a log somewhere. Your company should be able to notify the phone company to block the calls completely. Can you do a *69 to get the phone number?

get the phone number and log each call.
file a complaing with the FTC (federal trade commission) for harrassing calls.
the next time they call tell them you are going to file a complaint and then everytime they call, report them ..
believe me it will work. i've done it before and actually got results.
