For thoes of you who have a PT Cruiser, What do you think of them?

This is for people who own one. I'm looking at is the 2.4L non turbo, with manual 5 speed transmission. It has every option but leather, heated seats, and sunroof. What have you thought about them, what are problem areas and what are good things about them.

Update:

I am an automotive apprentice, but I have only seen 5 or 6 in the last 3 years. I know all about the lack of room they have in the engine compartment, but I do also have access to a hoist, so those problems are solved for me.

I had a 2004 PT and adored my car. Not a small car....not a big car. I went looking to change it to a 2008 convertible.....but got talked out of it.

I miss my PT. My family called it the family Hearst, and my co-workers called it the 'GANGSTA' car.....I don't care.

I miss the easy-on-the-gas.....I miss how it handles.....I miss being able to find it in a crowded parking lot....LOL.

I hear they are gonna stop making them, this year. I hope not.....cause I'm gonna give my new car one more year to get use to......then I'm going for that 2009 CONVERTIBLE PT.

I have a 2007 Touring model with the 4 spd auto. I agree that there is NO room under the hood, but in that respect, it has much in common with almost every other car out there. In the interest of making smaller lighter cars, the space and packaging underhood has gotten miniscule. I would not rate this car as any better or worse to work on than most modern cars underhood. Can it be done, YES, but you will invest time into it to do it yourself, or you will pay handsomely to get it done for you. I have done and will do all of the maintenance on all of my own vehicles, and it is something that I take into consideration when i purchase a car. The weak areas on the Cruiser are the spark plug wires (useless in about 15k miles) and though not relevant on yours, the automatic transmission (if not serviced PROPERLY). The timing belt is good for 120K miles (factory reccomendation) and it is a NON-interferece engine, so if the belt does break prematurely, you wont be likely to lose an engine. Overall, I look forward to MANY miles of enjoyment out of this car

They are impossible to work on. I'm not even joking. Open up the engine compartment of one and you'll see what I mean. You couldn't slide a deck of cards between any two parts and you have to take half the engine apart to even get to simple items like the thermostat and spark plugs.

My Dad owns a PT cruiser from 2003. The timing belt went on it a few months ago. I'm not even close to exaggerating when I say it took over a week of constant work to get the vehicle running again. The engine mounts had to be loosened and the motor had to literally be jacked up out of the car to do the work.

For the most part it's a very reliable car. There is a very large blind spot, so you rely entirely on your mirrors when going in reverse. According to my parents, even though it's a four cylinder, it gets very poor gas mileage and replacement parts are very expensive.

If you don't plan on doing your own work on the car, and you've found a good deal, go ahead and purchase it. But make sure you have it checked out for any problems by a reputable shop because it's a mechanics worst nightmare. Best of luck with it.

My grand kid has one and I take care of it for her. I've found it no harder to work on than any other front wheel drive vehicle. The timing belt is cake compaired to a Honda or Toyota. It took me abour 2 1/2 hours. You will enjoy the car the 2.4 is a very reliable engine. I like driving her PT "almost" as much as my 07 Charger R/T.
