What is your favorite book and why?
The Sound and the Fury
Why? A combination of things: the characters, the stream of consciousness narrative technique, the use of regional dialect, the use of four different narrators, the fact that each narrator has his own distinct voice, etc..

Scariest - Either Rosemary's Baby or The Amittyville Horror
Sadest - Hmm, that's tough, maybe The Color Purple
Funniest - Probably a joke book from my childhood, but I don't really read comedic novels. I'm going to try Christopher Moore though, I've heard he's good.
Exciting - I get really excited over supernatural/paranormal stuff, so my current most exciting book(s) would be the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs (Moon Called, Blood Bound, Iron Kissed).
Favorite books are the Mercedes Thompson series by Patricia Briggs because they are full of action with a dash of romance. I guess I really love the main character, Mercy. She's a kick-*** shifter who's a VW mechanic by day. She is a very strong, admirable person who grows as the books progress.
My recommendation for author goes to Patrica Briggs.

I can only answer a few of your questions....
The sadest book ive ever read was "Stone Fox" the most exciting book ive ever read was probably "Harry Potter" or the Twilight series, I cant decide, i have a favorite series, not a book, my favorite series is the Twilight series because it was so good i read the first book in two days, the second book in three days, and the third book in three days. I plan to read the fourth one as soon as it comes out! and the author i recommend is Stephenie Meyer. I love her books!! (She just started her career, she hasn't written that many books YET, but the ones that she has written so far are soooo good!)
:)
sorry i couldnt answer all of your questions!

Scariest book? I'm not easily scared, and I'm not into horror a lot, but I really enjoy HP Lovecraft, especially The Call of Cthulhu and At The Mountains of Madness.
Saddest book? The Road, by Cormac McCarthy (he wrote No Country for Old Men, and The Road is being turned into a movie with Viggo Mortensen). It's depressing and horrifying at the same time.
Funniest book? It's a toss-up between Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams and Good Omens by Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Both have similar kinds of humor, and I was laughing out loud during both of them, so if you like one, you'll probably like the other.
Most exciting book? Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson. It's a fast-paced cyberpunk novel with all kinds of cool weapons and computer viruses and motorcycles and katanas and stuff like that.
Non-fiction book? That's tough, but I'm going with A Brief History of Time by Stephen Hawking cause that's the book that was almost completely responsible for making me not only understand but fall in love with theoretical physics. (nerd moment much?)
Favorite book ever? It's either Lord of the Rings, or Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney (awesome cause it's got the original old english in there too).
One author? AAAAHHH! It depends... at the moment... I'm saying Neil Gaiman, cause he's really underrated.

I don't have a favourite book I have a favourite series, which is the Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton.
Why? well i love the supernatural stuff and it also has the mystery stuff and also a touch of romance and a few sexier bits as well. and Anita isn't perfect. she stuff's up alot but she always makes it right in the end, alot like real life.
And Guess who i would recommend people read
That's right LAURELL K HAMILTON.
She is basiclly a supernatural mystery writer with a hint of... I suppose you could call it romance.. But don't expect candle lit dinners.. She is a dark author.
