Is God an entity, a concept, or a definition?

And can you be more creative about this than folks in the Religion and Spirituality section (I'm guessing, yeah, and that you'll be able to do it w/o Biblical quotes and talking points.)

Update:

Do any of you actually know what an "entity,"(a conscious being) a "concept" (an idea/thought) or a "definition" (an explanation or description of something) is? If you did, you might be able to provide answers of greater substance.

I think God is a name we have given to something that exists in us, because sometimes it's easier to look outside yourself that to look in you.

Some say that religion and God were created by humans as a moral code, but I think that people have discovered the power of belief, and they wanted to use it to control the masses, in some cases and in others they used it as means of connecting with each other. My opinion is that we need a concept like God , because we are not strong enough and we need a haven , but it should not be this way. We should be able to live through ourselves , to take responsability for our life. Someone once said(i can't remember the name) that it's harder being an atheist because you dont' t have God to forgive your mistakes. I belive it to be true , because then you'd have to forgive yourself and that is a though thing to do.I admire people who can look in the mirror and accept the fact that that is who they are , and that take the blame on themselves, for their actions.

So this is what I think: If there is a God, he lives in you and if you need to believe in something, believe in yourself.

    (sorry for my english)

All three! No doubt you have heard of the trinity? (Pun intended). If you don't believe in "a god who is self aware" you can "maybe" throw out the word entity. Yet, for some, god is the sum total of things, which includes life, which means you have to put entity back in the mix of abstractions. And there is your problem in the philosophy section and perhaps here. You have put up a question with four "really big" words. The words in your question are very high on the order of abstraction and worse have no philosophical or theological working definitions among responders. I don't think throwing in Webster's street definitions helps much. Without some definition of terms you, and even I, have set ourselves up for failure; or at best a cheap but satisfying justification of our own opinions. Hey it makes Q&A work! The Webster paperback definition of concept doesn't really say much. It does allow one to define definition. Definitions are singular ideas which in usage are associated with certain words, which are labels, which are in turn common concepts. The best definition of concept I have ever seen was set down by Ernest Cassirer in his work Substance and Function. Cassirer goes into some detail to finally define a concept as: "A mental abbreviation." To appreciate the beauty of this simple definition for work in philosophy and life, and to see how the word concept really transcends Webster's street definition, you have to read his work. Suffice it to say that a concept is born of reasoning and experiences involving many ideas. As such it is a very high order abstraction for even a simple person. If you postulate God as a singular self aware being, knowing all and all seeing, then you must read Commandment One as either nonsense; or a statement which presupposes that man first deals with the word god and the idea of God's existance on a conceptual basis. "Thou shalt have no other gods before me." The only all knowing God must know that there are no other gods to put before him! So why write this in the first place? The only answer, with any logic to this postulate in the Judeo-Christian system, is that God fully understands that the human mind will manufacture gods by the very nature of its function. While I am not a trinitarian, my answer must remains that the god I call God is to my mind an entity, a concept and a definition. There remains but one God however many we may manufacture in our minds. What all this is to the human heart is another matter altogether.

Many say "this is what I think" but what about what God says Himself? He is real and alive. A living being/entity. If you are so sure He is not then why afraid to read the bible in its entirety while asking Him to give you guidance and wisdom. He is waiting for you to ask Him. God is this all real? is this book (bible)? please show me in a way I know it is you. I dare you to try Him. He will show up and prove to you that He is and always will be the author and the finisher. It will blow your mind! My mind was certainly blown and I became a believer ever since. I am a person that is not easily persuaded believe me. I am talking from a personal relationship I now have with Him. You don't have to go anywhere special to do this. Start in the privacy of your very home. He will lead you the rest of the way.

God is a supreme supernatural Spiritual being that is an entity who exist totally independent of any other existence. He is the creator of all other entities. Jesus is also an entity that exists from God who and was given the authority by God to be the deliver of all humankind. The Holy Spirit is also of God that was sent to empower people to experience the love of God, know His will, to comfort, lead and direct us into the truth of the Bible until the day that Jesus returns. Jesus will fulfill the complete purpose of restoring Christian believers into perfection and everlasting life with God in a place that's designed and laid out by God. Christians will forever be with God as was His original purpose for humankind.

    great question!

i would have to say its my opinion that God is above all a concept (as evidenced by our discussion about it!), but can be expressed as an entity from our perspective (perhaps through definition) and due to our lack of ability to comprehend the infinite, it tends to fall into the category of definition by default so we are able to grasp it, all the while with the actual definition varying widely depending on who you ask.

so... God is the *idea* of an infinite *entity* which cannot be fully described in finite terms and must be *defined* within the structure of finite reality in order to be understood by the human mind

To the majority God is an entity.

God is an entity. One we humans do not yet have enough knowledge to understand yet.

If you take what we do know so far, and apply it to your life (not the ceremonial, organized religion stuff), you can actually see a difference, and we, as a whole, evolve to a further understanding and better place.

Try it, it works. Tolerance, reverance, acceptance, and forgiveness. The entity designed us this way.

'God' or any other deification is simply a similar being to oneself, of which one is a hologram yet existent at a level of sophistication and development and understanding and merit that does far exceed one's own, yet no more or less an entity, and!, to which one can and does develop to a similar state. And so one may ask of the truth, 'What is God?' and be accorded the apt, true response, 'You are.'

neither do we know right now.

if God was an entity he could have made us feel/shown his presence, though if he is does he even want to? if you said you have felt good, how do you know its him? throughout history humans are known to delude themselves.

being a concept is much more easy to accept, mostly because you dont need concrete physical evidence.

"God is a concept by which we measure our pain" - John Lennon

definition of what? isnt it the same as concept. or something like, definition of how we percieve the world.

anyway neither of this even the existence of God in the first place. God could be any or none. if you want my opinion, i dont have one, because who am i to know?

God is an entity imagined by a concept that has a definition which is infinite.
