Why is Barack Obama's religion such a big deal?

His father was Muslim and he's Christian today. I don't understand why people call him a terrorist because he has an Islamic background. That's so stereotypical.

Update:

And to add, I have NOT forgotten 9/11, but I'm quite certain that not all Muslims plan on attacking the United States.

This nonsense about Obama's religion arises from prejudice, dirty politics and desperation.

    Good Question!

Contrary to psychotic belief, Obama is a Christian, just as the past 43 Presidents have been. We have NEVER has a President of a different faith.

But some people seem to think that because his childhood included exposure to the Muslim faith, that he is either a Muslim in disguise (and therefore a terrorist, because as we all know, the over 1 BILLION Muslims are ALL terrorists, right?), or he's not a "good enough" Christian.

The sheeple are stupid. Religion doesn't matter. This is America, not Iran.

Because he MADE it a big deal by writing a BOOK, The Audacity of Hope.

Then he made a BIG DEAL out of that book and the TITLE of that book, saying that the INSPIRATION for the book and the title were from his MENTOR, the Rev. Jeremiah WRIGHT.

If OBAMA hadn't made such a big deal out of the relationship with the church and Wright, it would NOT have been such a big deal.

Any of the other stuff is an effort by the Obama campaign to DEFLECT attention from the real issues of Obama's very far left politics as reflected in his associations through that church.

    It's not fooling anybody.

Except for you and his supporters who don't seem to understand.

I don't know that any rational person is worried whether BHO is a Christian and Muslim. Christians and Muslims both base membership on espoused belief, so far as I understand. So if he thinks he's a Christian, by definition he is one. If he espouses Christian beliefs, by definition he's not a Muslim.

I think that what has people concerned is the choice of people he hangs out with. That divides in to 3 camps:

Those that agree with the people he's been hanging out with,

Those that disagree with the people he's been hanging out with, but who don't think that those people are an indication of how BHO might act, and

Those that disagree with the people he's been hanging out with, and are concerned that it might be an indication of BHO's true leanings.

Personally, I listen to what the candidates claim in their debates, and look at their past voting records.

People will always be ignorant. They make a big deal about his religion because there is nothing else to say. And so what if his Muslim or Christian??.. People need to start looking at a bigger picture and stop dwelling on stupid things!

It's an issue b/c he's dishonest about it. What his church of 20+ years preaches does not match up with what he claims to believe.

It's also an issue for some people, right or wrong, b/c we're at war with Muslims at the present time. The same thing happened with Japanese Americans during WWII. If a Japanese American were running for President back then, it would have been a huge issue.

Stereotypes exist for a reason. It's because people at some point notice trends. Obviously, there are exceptions to these stereotypes, but a lot of people feel it's not worth taking a gamble with the highest office in the nation--not to mention the fact that many people simply disagree with his stance on the issues.

I personally don't care what religion he is, but I think he's being dishonest about it. I totally disagree with him on nearly every issue, though, which is why I'm not voting for him. His methods are completely wrong. His intentions may be good in some limited instances, but his methods have been tried and have failed many times before.

It's because the Media says it is a big deal.

We are at the whim of the media which is why no one knows that earlier this week Dennis Kucinich D-Oh, introduced articles of impeachment against President Bush. NO media coverage!!

His father was actually raised as a Christian but was an agnostic when Obama was born. Obama's grandfather converted to Islam. Obama's mother was also an agnostic.

People care about religion. It was a big issue in 1960 as Kennedy was Catholic - he only won by a little over 100,000 votes. There is a reason nearly every president has been from a sect of the 'protestant' Christian faith; it is one of the things this nation was founded on.
