Do you think that it is possible to 'accidentally' self harm?

I stopped cutting almost nine weeks ago, but the feelings were getting stronger and although I knew that I did not want to cut again, I felt like I had to. I tried all the distraction techniques that I knew of, and the feelings were still there until it came to emptying a sandpit. The boxes that I used had some sharp edges that I could feel digging into my arms and wrists. At this point, I should have put something with longer sleeves to cover my arms so that they didn't get cut, but I carried on- and now I have about ten cuts on my arms...it's a little worrying that I went so long without cutting and then did it like this...so what do you think...Self harm, or an accident, I'd be interested to know what you think.

    You cannot accidently self-harm.

You knew that the sharp edges were digging into you. You could feel it and yet you continued with it. Someone without a self-harm history would have immediately moved away and not let this happen to themselves as soon as they felt it.

Well done for not cutting but it sounds like you are not out of the woods yet and need more support with your problem to prevent further damage to yourself, "Accidential" or not!

i know how you feel, i know the feeling of wanting to harm yourself - the feeling is overwhelming. you are amazing for trying to distract yourself, i have not yet mastered doing that.

i don't think the harming was intentional self harm but it wasn't necessarily an accident either. i think that the fact that you didn't get a blade and cut yourself is amazing, you were trying to stop yourself from doing it.

Just think, if it was self harm then I'm sure the injuries would have been much worse.

Dont let it set you back though, 9 weeks is an amazing amount of time to not harm

It all depends on if you wanted to hurt yourself! If I were to grab a razor and start cutting myself over the sink, that would be self harm, cuz' I wanted to hurt myself. If I were to accidentally cut myself shaving, it would be an accident, since I didn't want it to happen. It all depends on your reasoning.

If you had thought "It will take to long to put on a long sleeve shirt, I'll just do this quick" it would be one thing. But if you had thought "wHooo.... this feels good!" It would be something else entirely. If you wanted to hurt yourself, your cuts were no accident.

Well, that wouldnt be self harm. Self harm is when you intentionally hurt yourself. What you are looking for would just be called an accident.

But great job on 9 weeks without harming!!! I can only go a month!!!

It's your subconcious, but deliberate - I know *exactly* what you mean though. You do know what you're doing, because you want to do it, but your subconcious is telling you that you shouldn't, which makes you want to do it all the more...

Does 'deliberate accident' make sense? I know because I've done it; carelessly slicing a cucumber, for example; or pressing too hard with the razor when shaving my legs.

Don't be ashamed, you've not failed.

i don;t know if im the best person to answer this, with my history of self harm.

But kudos on you for not doing it for so long. it sounds like its a genuine accident and you were just busy moving things....

its not as if you set out to go and do that is it?

No, self harm is on purpose.

When you feel low about something and you think it's the only way you can relieve stress.

if its an accident its not self harming-but if you did it yourself its not an accident-whether u think u wanted to do it or not

You knew it was digging into you and indirectly you have self harmed.

The reason is : you knew you could have prevented it.
