squats, and the people who use them are called squatters. the name came from the act of "squatting" on the floor.

You must mean a 'squat' - the origins of which go right back to the Middle Ages here in England and refer to 'squatter's rights' - a person is said to own a piece of land or a building etc., having 'squatted' there for 12 years and not paid any rent. The ownership of etc., then passes to the new owner or squatter. Some landowners allow 'squatters' but charge what is called a peppercorn rent - say £1 a year. This then equals a rent and stops the said squatter(s) from ever owning the land and/or property etc.

The best advice to all property and land owners who have squatters is to charge them a rent - even one penny a year is a rent thus avoiding squatters rights etc.....
