What's causing graphic artifacts in my games?

Recently I've started getting graphical artifacts in some of the games I'm playing. The artifacts will steadily get worse, then the game will freeze for about 5-10 seconds. When it unfreezes, the screen looks fine with no artifacts, then the process repeats with artifacts eventually appearing on screen again and getting worse until it "resets". The games run, but it makes it frustrating to play. Is my graphics card overheating? I've dusted the entire system out.

It definitely sounds like an overheating issue. Depending on what your card is, there should be a utility for monitoring the fan speeds and card temperatures. If it's an NVidia card, there's an option to log the temperatures over a period of time, and that way you can pinpoint what actions you were doing when it crashes, and what the temperatures were at the time. If not, Speedfan should be able to show you your temperatures.

If it does turn out to be overheating, you can get a slot fan to put next to your card and see if that helps.
