Does anyone know much about hydrocephalus and the operation to make it bearable?

Update:

What are some of the side effects that come with it if the person has had it for a long time, and their skull has fused together? Is there anything that can be done to reverse the problems associated with these?

i'm not totally familar with the proceed but it consist in inserting a small catheter under the skin, that drains the excess of cerebral spine fluid into the abdomen.-

the risk of this kind of things are the infections.-

the more time the person suffers from high intracraneal pressure the more damage it makes.-

cerebeluos herniation cause by the increased pressure can be deadly due to the compression of the respiratory center.-

when it's done in newborn babies it usually functions perfectly, i'm not aware of the stadistics on adults though.-

    hope this helps you.-

Hydrocephalus can only be relieved by the insertion of shunt in the brain that drains into the body where the fluid is absorbed and dealt with. There is no other way to prevent the hydrocephalus. If it is in a child you want it done early to prevent the mishaping of the skull.

hydrocephalus is also known as "water on the brain."

A shunt can be placed at the brain stem, to divert the water. It's a farily common procedure, with controllable risks.

The shunt does remain in, though, and must be monitored. Occassionally it will clog and need to be opened or replaced.

I know several kids with hydrocephalus. When this is the only problem, and it is correctly quickly, children can grow normally, and their cognitive functions and intelligence are not affected.
