Dogs just ate a bar of Godiva chocolate, need to go to vet?!?

I have two West Highland White Terriers. I got out of the shower and found an entire wrapper of a dark chocolate Godiva bar shredded up in the floor. I've always heard chocolate is horrible for dogs, should I be worried or do something about it?

Watch the dogs for a while if they act fine, then it should be OK.

Dark chocolate is unfortunately the MOST toxic of all of them, and westies are not large dogs as to where they can metabolize it very well. Ignore all advice, and call your vet ASAP to determine whether or not they want you to bring the dogs in to have their systems flushed. I would imagine that the answer would be yes given the size of the dogs and the type of chocolate they got into. If treated soon and correctly, they should be just fine! If you hesitate, you might regret it in the long run. Best of luck, and go call now!

Yes, with dark chocolate and small dogs, I'd get them to the vet immediately to have vomiting induced and active charcoal given. One ounce of unsweetened chocolate is a potentially lethal dose for a 10 pound dog.

A full bar of dark chocolate is going to be highly toxic for a small dog. Take them both now. Now waiting

If you have any hydrogen peroxide about, you have 2 hours from the time of ingestion to give them some and make them throw it all up.

Once it is all out, no worries.

Please get peroxide in them asap. the dose is 1 teaspoon per 10 lbs body weight.

    I would call the vet.

Chocolate can make a dog VERY sick, and even be toxic, especially for smaller dogs.

"Now different types of chocolate have different doses of theobromine per ounce of chocolate. Here are the usual amounts:

milk chocolate=45mg/oz= toxicity at 1 oz eaten/pound body weight.

    semi-sweet chocolate=150mg-260mg /oz=toxicity at 1 oz eaten/3-6 pounds body weight.

    baker's chocolate=450mg/oz=toxicity at 1 oz eaten/10 pounds body weight

cocoa beans-450-1500mg/oz=toxicity at one ounce eaten/10-33 lbs body weight"

"Do NOT wait to see if your pet will be okay. After two hours of eating the chocolate all of it has passed out of the stomach into the intestines for complete absorption into the body. Call your veterinarian for recommendations. Most will recommend you bring the pet in so vomiting can be made to happen and supportive care can be given as well as monitoting of the pet for signs of toxicity and symptomatic treatment if needed.

I used to do emergency veterinary work and there is nothing sadder than seeing a patient too late to help something that could have been treated effectively if done so in time."

LOL Been there done that!Chocolate is not good for dogs, but don't worry he'll live!

One of my dogs did the same thing only she took it one step further, she took the glass lid off the candy bowl, LOL they can be smart when they want too.

Now the candy bowl get put up some where she can't reach it!!

Give your little terriers a pat on their wee heads and put the candy up higher where they can't reach !!

Source(s): I guess if it was a really large bar of candy, just call your vet, it probably is nothing to worry about! After you call the vet let us know how your little pooch is! When I first posted this, should have realized every situation can be different, just because my dog was ok, doesn't mean yours will be, I did some checking and that was a big candy bar! Sorry!!!

Don't freak out. During Halloween my little bother used to leave his candy laying around as soon as my dog smelled it she would run grab one and keep stashing it under the bed and then would eat it. It's been years and she's still alive. Just try to leave it out of their reach, because too much will give them an upset stomach.

No worries....my dog has eaten m and m's and loves them. We can never leave them out...or they will be gone. She never got sick cause of it...I heard they can, but I don;t believe it to be true. It must be A LOT of chocolate. But that little bit won't hurt. My Ginger ate quite a few cause I remember the bowl was nearly full. I also know of a dog who ate practically a whole chocolate. When his owners came home. He knew he did wrong and was hiding under a living room chair. He expanded somehow...and couldn't get out. Lifting the chair from him...he was fine. Never did get sick.
