There is a ton to do in DC. I'll put my standard touring advice at the bottom of this post, but I'll say that some good areas for nightlife include Adams Morgan (Woodley Park/Zoo/Adams Morgan metro station, then walk across the Duke Ellington Bridge and along Columbia St to 18th) including a number of clubs and live music venues.

Other places are the Penn Quarter (more a restaurant and theatre scene) The foggy bottom area (GWU students), Georgetown (more students) and Old Town Alexandria. Also Shaw and U Street if you like Jazz. All accessible via Metro.

For touring advice, I suggest visiting in five major areas. They are

    1. Monuments and Memorials - these help make DC Unique. You can visit the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial, World War II Memorial, Korean War Memorial and Vietnam Memorial on the mall, and the Jefferson memorial and FDR Memorial on the Tidal Basin, but there are memorials and monuments all over Washington. These should be a part of your visit.

    2. The government buildings. In addition to the White House (which you can only see on a tour arranged by your member of congress) there is the Supreme Court (open M-F) the Capitol Building (M-Saturday), the Library of Congress, the National Archives, the U.S. Botanical Gardens, and the Bureau of Engraving and printing. Spend some time looking at how US government operates.

    3. The museums. 16 different Smithsonian buildings, 14 of them in DC, the National Gallery of Art, the National Holocaust Memoral are all free and well worth visiting. Others, like the Newseum, Madame Tussauds, the Spy Museum, the Corcoran, the Phillips Collection - have a fee, but are worth it. I don't know a city more museum rich than ours.

    4. Visit a neighborhood. DC is much more than the museums and the government,; it's a living vital city with some fantastic neighborhoods. Visit Shaw, where African American culture is paramount, Adams Morgan where diversity is the key, and Chinatown where earlier waves of immigrants made their mark. Foggy bottom is a great international district, the SW Waterfront has it's own allure.

    5. Check out culture, Free performances in the Kennedy Center, Military Band Concerts year round, World class theatre including the Shakespeare Theatre, the Arena Stage, Source, Signature, Wooley Mammoth and many more professional theatre companies are here, plus the National Orchestra, the Washington Ballet and a half dozen top rate choral groups!

a million. bypass to Mount Vernon(George Washington's living living house) it fairly is acceptable and only outside the city 2. Washington Monument 3. nationwide Zoo ( it fairly is a Smithsonian so it fairly is loose plus it fairly is only a ideal zoo) 4. Masonic Temple( it fairly is not any further fairly a temple yet once you get a expedition you're prepared to bypass as a lot because the tower that overlooks DC/Arlington at 3 hundred ft it fairly is a ideal internet website) 5. Smithsonian American historic previous museum 6. Smithsonian artwork museum ( settle on for the gardens and the kind of the shape they're breath taking) 7. eat at Ben's Chili bowl 8. See the Jefferson memorial 9.Lincoln Memorial 10. Arlington nationwide Cemetery 11. See the White living living house 12. bypass to the capital structure 13.the 9-11 memorial on the pentagon 14. Ford's Theater (the position pres. Lincoln replace into shoot) those are in basic terms fairly some the superb themes yet there are a range of of more advantageous that i do now not imagine of you're prepared to have time for
