Putting ice/water near a computer.. YES.. OR NO?

Hello there - apparently my sister just won't believe putting the ice cooler/ pack (IMAGE HERE; http://www.cooler-store.com/images_templ/cooler_ic... ) do ANY harm to a laptop.. when it gets hot, my sister places an ICE PACK under the LAPTOP.. and USUALLY at the place where it's the HOTTEST, and where it can melt, and make water go in the computer, and mess it up..

Are putting ice packs under laptops effective? To "COOL" down the computer (When they obviously AREN'T) Do they work? Does it harm the computer?

Thank you.

Update:

Oh, and even if it seems obvious or tons other has answered the question, more the better.. my older sister's kind of dense... so, yeah.

Oh, and any resources to websites that say "Don't put ice packs near the computer" would be helpful..

Oh, and ice packs are made of plastic, too...

And then, also, please answer very specifically, my sister won't be satisfied with any answer unless the way I worded what she does is correct.

Update 2:

Wow, I said "oh" a lot.. o_o

Update 3:

Yeah, I thought it was stupid, too.. ugh,

I don't think it's even SAFE to put an ice pack anywhere near the computer..

Today, she put it underneath, not where the water can get in, but just at another area, which is a terrible idea.

Thankfully, it's not shutting down.

Update 4:

Thanks for your answers!

Michael; yeah, I was hoping for one, because I thought maybe my sister just totally wouldn't get it.. LMAO..

I think it's dry ice, yeah.

Update 5:

THANK YOU Victoria!

    You asked for it! lol

It is only a temporary fix by the sounds of it, and you do have to leave enough room for air to circulate. Suggestion, get something to monitor the temperature, and what makes it the 'hottest'. Check it's working alright, and maybe look at a lap top cooler.

Another options is to give it a good clean inside, and get rid of dust :)

    lol...you're welcome :)

Ice packs are actually ok, if you make sure that they don't sweat into the computer and short it. Maybe put the icepack in a plastic bag (or any other bag to make sure that the water doesn't get out), and you should be good.

Or you could spend a few bucks and get a laptop cooling base, which works surprisingly well.

You should definitely NOT use dry ice though...or put your computer in a meat locker. Extreme temperatures could warp the computer's motherboard...which is bad.

Putting an ice pack there is stupid, even if it is sealed because condensation is forming and can get inside. If your computer is too hot and shutting down or something then it is defective. If you are too much of a wimp to have it on your lap cause it is warm, then put it on a desk.

I dont think you are going to find sites telling you not to put water in the computer because it is obvious.

It is not a very good idea as the cooling is not very efficient, you introducing a very steep temperature gradient and the possibility of condensation and/or water ingress into the laptop should be quite a concern. You can buy relatively cheap cooling trays with fans driven from a USB port, they would be a much better solution.

LMAO... Great input to the question.

Putting a ice pack under something thats meant to be hot, dosent seem like a good idea.

I would advise AGAINST it, most people answering this question are right, get a Laptop docker with fans built in.

ps. get it for her birthday, so she would have to use it!

Buy a laptop cooler. Like a docking station but you just polace it on it and there's a fan under to cool it.
