John Entwistle, hands down. I love Paul and The Beatles, but Entwistle was a heluva lot better. He redefined bass playing. He turned the bass into an instrument that people notice, not just something make music sound more "full." Honestly, Paul wasn't that great of a bassist. He was certainly competent and technically skilled, but he didn't really do anything "new."
So, even though The Beatles are the greatest band of all time, Entwistle owns Paul.
However, Victor Wooten owns both of them. I think you'll appreciate this interpertation of "Norwegian Wood," Mrs. Paul McCartney :]

Entwistle is just the greatest bassist on earth besides James Jamerson and Jaco Pastorious. I am not saying McCartney is bad, he is just not on that level.

Tough call. Very different styles. I think John might have been better at cranking out really driving, powerful basslines to go along with Keith's madman drumming. When I think of John, I always think of The Real Me. One of the best bass performances in rock history.
Paul on the other hand was subtly clever, he might not have had the fastest fingers or been the most experimental, but came up with some really good, solid inventive basslines. But I'd say overall I'd go with John

i think entwistle is better strictly as a bassist...he just contributes so much to the who on that instrument, while mccartney's contributions to the beatles are more geared towards singing and songwriting, and this is reflected in his other projects and solo work

depends what kind of style of music you like, the beatles and the who are great....technically speaking john was a much better bassists but mccartney i believe is the BEST melodic bass player! just listen to the bass on 'something', it fits in beautifully with the song...so he was better at fitting in the bass into a song...thats what i think anyway :)

Paul McCartney, definitely. Although the greatest bass in the world is Les Claypool.

Paul is great, Entwistle is called "Thunderfingers" but the best is Phil Lesh!

Of those two. John Entwistle.
