4x2 - 4x - 3 = 0
4x2 - 6x +2x - 3 = 0
2x(2x - 3) + (2x - 3) = 0
(2x + 1)(2x - 3) = 0
a general rule for ax^2 + bx + c
divide b in a factor such that their multiplication is ac
here in this problem b= -4
and ac = -12
b = -4 = -6 + 2
or you can simply use the formula
x= { - b +/-sqrt(b^2-4ac)}/2a

4x² - 4x - 3 = 0
The traditional method of (4x )(x ) will not work because the middle term will be off no matter how we place the '1' and the '3' and the '+'s and '-'s.
So, the best we can do is to pull out 4x
4x(x - 1) - 3 = 0
