Concerning military small arms, what is the most common round?

In numbers produced, what is the most prevalent and popular small arms caliber? Is it the .223, .308, or something entirely different?

    NATO 5.56 or 7.62

military does not use .223, it is not the same round. The 5.56 mm has a higher chamber pressure and should not be fired in civilian rifles chambered for .223

small arms are considered anything man portable

Small arms are anything short of 12.7mm or so, I thought.

Anyways, the 5.56 (similar, but not the same as the .223) is the most popular round, with the 7.62 (same with .308) as the second most popular.

The 6.8 round needs to be entered into that equation in the next few years though. We need to drop the 5.56.

    Several Definitions of Small Arms:

Small Arms - Small arms are man portable or vehicle mounted light weapons, designed primarily for anti-personnel use. Small arms include rifles, pistols and light machine guns.

Small arms are defined as smaller infantry weapons, such as firearms that an individual soldier can carry.

“Small arms” are, broadly speaking, weapons designed for individual use

small arm : a handheld firearm (as a handgun or shoulder arm) —usually used in plural

"There is not yet an internationally agreed definition of small arms and light weapons... Small arms are broadly categorized as those weapons intended for use by individual members of armed or security forces."

9 X19mm Parabellum which was developed in 1902.

FWIW, most common round, military or civilian, would be the .22 Long Rifle rimfire cartridge.

5.56 for rifle and 9mm for side arm. You may shoot some 7.62 in the m60 depending on branch of service and job. Count on oo buck in 12ga also. 50 cal for ship mounted gunners and 20mm for most fixed wing aircraft. This should cover it.
