2001 Plymouth Neon?

My check engine light is constantly on in my car. I've had the codes read-can't remember exactly what was wrong (something is loose), but I was told it wasn't a huge problem and it would cost way too much to find/fix it. Every so often I stop and get it checked to make sure there isn't a new code/problem.

I have to get my car's emmisons checked. They won't do the test if there are any lights on the dash. Any one know how to reset the light?

Some states use a scanner to check OBDII (on board diagnostic II, a computer program thats sole function is to test the function of the emission systems) monitors to verify correct function and if a code is present, they will not pass you, other states use only a sample test ( test probe placed in the exhaust streem) , to verify emission levels, and then some areas use a mass emission test (IM240, total mass collection) to measure the actual weight and type of the emissions produced by a vehicle, so without knowing what type of test they will use it's hard to say if you will pass or not.

Simply taking the bulb out will not erase the code , and some testers check the function of the "tell tail" feature, a bulb check when first starting the vehicle. If you clear the code and try to drive directly to the test facility , and the site is looking at scan data, the OBDII monitors may not have had enough drive time to complete (typically take more than one drive cycle).

Disconnect the battery for a few minutes will reset the PCM and all the OBDII monitors, If the fault is an intermittent condition it will not reset until it's seen again by the PCM, if it is a hard code, the light will illuminate almost immediately. Most codes will require more that one failure event to keep the light illuminated for more that a single "trip cycle".

you could have someone use a scanner on it and turn the light off,but if the problem is still their it will automatically come back on again, other than taking the bulb out there is no way to turn it off without repairing the problem,i wish there was a quick way i could tell you to do this, but there isnt, good luck with it.

if you know some one that own an auto repair shop take it in and have them hook it up to the diagnostic computer and have them take it from there. just only if you know the person.
