Internet browsing slow, download speed high.?
Hello,
my internet browsing has gotten really slow.
Yes the latest versions java and adobe flash player and active x are installed. Pages take long to load not because of a slow internet connection cause if I start a download it runs at the full and even more speed.
My modem shows activity constantly when downloading but when browsing it accesses the net then stops for about 20secs then there's activity again.
Firefox is my default browser. I get the same problem with IE7.
Just installed firefox 3 yesterday and the problem still persists.
I reinstalled xp ( problem exists in vista too - dual boot ) it worked for about a day but it slowed down again.
I tried safari too, no luck.
Really not in the mood to reinstall xp right now, I did it so much that I can recite my cd-key.
Any other solution would be nice.
Thanks.
Thanks for the answers.
I am using an ADSL modem and have 2.5gigs of RAM.
I have the latest updates for my virus protection and clean my system regularly, almost too regularly.
Any technical advice would be appreciated.

You need to clean out your system.
Do disk cleanup and defrag on a regular basis.
Spyware and adware can also cause slowdowns, make sure you have the latest updates for your anti-virus software.
Anything that uses up a lot of system resources will slow down your system also, like toolbars, or any other addons that you don't use regularly.
You might even need to max out your system memory.
BHO's (Browser Helper Objects) will also cause system slowdowns
Go to this website and download winpatrol 2008.
It's a very good program that can help free up system resources that are being used by programs that you don't normally use or don't want to be running

100mbps is not your speed to the internet, its just the speed between your computer and the high speed internet box (cable modem or dsl modem). The speed from there out to the Internet is different, and much slower. Your speed to the internet is probably much closer to 1mbps. This means about 100KB a second download at top speed -- and that's only if the place you're downloading from can work that fast. Filesharing networks are a lot slower, often, because it depends on how many other people have the file you want, and aren't full with downloads from other people. Uploading is almost always slower than downloading. Usually the speed that the high speed internet company gives you is the download speed. The upload speed is usually considerably slower (like 1/4 as fast). If you've run an online speed tester and it looked okay, then there's nothign wrong with your internet connection. If pages are slow to load, it could be you have a slow computer, or other things are running that are taking up memory and CPU time.

It may be that your router, or cablemodem/DSL modem needs to have its DNS infor updated. try resetting the cablemodem, then router.
