In tonight's Euro 2008 game, the stats said Turkey 9 shots, 8 on target... yet they had hit the bar twice...

Surely hitting the bar is "off target"?

Can anyone explain why these are counted as "on target"?

They made a mistake. It doesn't get simpler than that. Hitting the woodwork is a shot OFF target. Where are these stats from?

To the people below this. On target means if the goalkeeper doesn't save it, it is in the goal. So how can the post act as inside the goal

Edit: I figured out why. The second time it hit the bar. It wasn't a shot. I think it was a cross or a deflection. But I don't remember anyone trying to lob jens Lehmann and they hit the crossbar. Check on a websites highlights, I don't think it was a shot

hitting the bar is off target as the target is the goal not the post or bar

they arnt counted they had 8 shots on target and they hit the bar

Maybe because the crossbar is sort of like still part of the goal; the Turks made CONTACT with with the goal, whether it was the net or woodwork. I think it should be counted as ON TARGET because it did make some effect on the goal.

As a striker what do you target the net or the post?

Obviously the net it is the target althought the post is just to help hold up the net.

Turkey had the luck then now it was Germany's turn.

i was crying my head off, when the last whistle went. This was probably Turkey's best match but they lost.

    i couldn't believe it.

i thought i was watch england; because they also play good in the semis and quaters but eventually they lose, when they have to win.

    * I give best wishes to Turkey team to keep this form in future. lets see if they go on like this.

because the bar to them is a pub and they were on target for getting knocked out, just like they did

    GO GERMANY GO....

So what if it goes in off the post then? Cos it was "off target" in the first place...

Because the bar holds the nets and is part of the goalkeepers goal area.

I only remember them hitting the bar once.
