What was the average cost for a new movie release on VHS in the 80's and 90's?

So, I'm 23, and I don't remember how expensive new releases were on video tapes when they were first released and throughout the 90's. I got into an argument with my friend yesterday who insisted that new releases used to be $40!

If you have a website verifying your finding, that would be even better! Thanks!

I do remember that there were some releases that were overpriced. But usuually, if they wanted them to sell, they were priced under $30 ($24.95). Then, there were always lower quality knock offs (those that were recorded in EP using less actual tape or thinner, that could be purchases for about $15 but may be eaten by your VHS.

When VHS was king, it was impossible to buy "Gone With The Wind" brand new under $99. Of course now you can get it on DVD under $12.
