After the 70's gas lines, whose stupid idea was it to build those big SUVs and trucks?

Update:

I agree with all you actually. There are those that need larger vehicles, but there are way too many single people driving around in a car that seats 8.

Okay, there are some people that legitimately need one.

But, the people that don't ... I'm sure they're feeling the pain of their decision every time they go to the pump. The price of gas isn't going down any time soon. Payback's a _____ , ya' know?

I agree. I don't understand why some retired people have 2 of them. We live in New England but really, it's not winter all of the time. They don't really go anywhere. I can see 1 but 2.

I needed to rent a vehicle and didn't because the only option was an SUV. The agent agreed with me when I told her I thought it was kind of stupid, a single person driving one. This was down south, in nice weather.

GM and Ford thought they knew the American consumer. They were wrong and are paying the price.

Looks like it started with Jeep.

But it’s not all about the gas and sometime it is not as stupid as you think. The problem is that some people following the fashion buying SUVs or Trucks when they don’t really need them.

You can blame the consumers -- that's what they wanted, so that's what they got. Look at all the bozos who wanted Hummers to be made commercially available after they saw them used by the military in the first Gulf War.
