Where in the Southwest US might I catch a barfish?

Update:

I am looking for prime areas to barfish.....

Update 2:

....necessary equipment and so forth.

Update 3:

I swear, you guys from Florida have spent too many days under the sun. You are describing a widely distributed species known as a "barfly".... your answers are very good, Injun goes so far as to included 2 barely legal ones! Nice try, think I'll leave the question up a couple days and see what else pops up.

I'm sorry I can't put you on any in my area (central Louisiana), but the time for prime barfishing has come and gone in my area-The barfish seem to like a current in the waters to school up and feed, and the back waters have just recently went down and everything is pretty much pool level with no current. It's a mystery as to where they go when the current leaves out. The Catahula lake area, with Little River coming in on one side and the diversion canal out the other and flowing into the Black River is a paradise for people that like to fish for them. It seems all that is required of them is a pretty good current in the water. When they are running, you can catch them until your arms play out. As you know, they are extremely hard fighters and are a ball to catch. I sure hope that you can get put on some, because they are a break from the usual fish a person fishes for- I wish you had asked 4 weeks earlier. Your question got me thinking. I have fished this state all my life and I have no idea where the barfish go when the current plays out in our waters. In a lifetime of fishing, I can count on one hand, the number of times I caught barfish without a current being present.I wish some one would give me the answer to that one.Good luck!

Hmmm.... that's a tough one. The only "Barfish" I know of is in San Marco's by the name of Lucy. . You don't catch it, it catches you. The only equipment you need is a pocket full of cash and a shot glass filled to the top. You know a bar fish when you see one, it just ain't regular stock in that area.

Been there done that and my brain wished it died the following morn. Other than that, I have no clue what you're talking about unless you mean a " Bar Jack." or a juvenile " sheepshead." Can't help you there, still recovering from Lucy's 5 years later... It was a night I'll never remember.LOL.~good luck catchin'.

OK, I'll bite. Maybe you catch one in a bar with a beer.

I think you can catch one at Lowes Highpoint Marina on Lake Texoma.

OK, look a barfish is not in my McClanes or my Kindersley fishing encyclopedias. The web finds a bar fish not a barfish, and says it is a white bass by another name. I feel better already. You and dumdum really had me going on this one..
