To get a grip of the bat so you don't lose it as easy. Some players rub it on their helmet, I don't know why exactly.

Pine Tar is applied to the wooden baseball bats in the MLB. It provides extra grip on the bat, and kinda makes the batter batting glove sorta stick to the bat. Players like to use this, especially if they are ones that take big swings, just for added security, so the bat doesnt fly out of their hands and into the stands. Even with batting goves, many players still use pine tar, because batting gloves still dont always provide for as safe of a grip, as pine tar does... i hope that helps...

In my experience, pine tar works the best. Taping the handle causes a lot of wear on your batting gloves (or your hands) and doesn't create as good a grip as pine tar. Of course, the disadvantages of pine tar are you have to keep re-applying it and it makes am awful mess, especially if you don't wear batting gloves. Also, pine tar is one of those baseball smells, and goes hand-in-hand with the sound of the crack of a bat and the taste of sunflower seeds.

Pine tar is the sticky stuff you put on the bat. You use it so your hands don't slide on the bat. It gives you a better grip.

It's a sticky substance that helps you better grip the bat, and it helps prevent it from flying out of your hands when you swing hard. It's applied by just rubbing a small amount on the handle of the bat.
