Indians in Dances With Wolves, Sioux in the movie, Comanche in the book?

Why are the Indians in the movie Dances With Wolves Sioux but in the book they are Comanche? Which came first, the book or the movie? Why the change?

    Info on wikipedia claims author created story as a screenplay, but no studio was interested in buying the rights.

    Costner read it, and prompted author to publish it as a book to increase it's exposure.

    If true, apparently that worked.

    Regarding the Comanche vs Lakotah Sioux, a book reviewer on Amazon.com had following conjecture for the change:

    1) the scenery of the Northern Plains was considered more cinematic as opposed to more arid Southern locales;

    2) a perception of Comanche culture as more violent;

    3) a perception of the Lakotah language as more poetic sounding.

    Perhaps only Costner and studio know for sure.

    The book always comes first.

    Movie producers always change things. They might have dressed the actors like "Sioux", but they had the Native actors speak "Chippewa".

    So go figure.
