Shifting an automatic from 2nd to drive while driving?

I have a 1994 Cougar with +161K miles on it, and the transmission is starting to go out. Sometimes it will shift into 2nd gear even though the indicator says it is in drive, but I won't realize it until I am on the highway. In our area, there are not very many places to pull over on the highway due to road construction. My fiance says that I should just shift the car from 2nd to neutral and then to drive without stopping, but I am nervous about shifting while the car is moving. So, is it worse to drive 65mph in 2nd (3-4 thousand rpm) until I find a place to pull over or to shift gears while the car is moving? Does the answer change if sometimes it takes 2-3 tries to get it into the right gear? Thanks.

Just move the shift lever one notch up from 2nd. You can do this while driving, and it doesn't hurt the automatic transmission at all. You could even take your foot off the gas and shift into neutral .. and then back down one step into Drive. Taking your foot off the accelerator prevents over-revving the engine when you shift into neutral. Why would it take 2-3 tries to get it into the right gear? Do you have to look at the indicator to tell when you've put the car in Drive? You should be able to shift the car into the proper gear without looking down at the indicator.

I think your fiance should drive that car and you should drive his...

It's definitely not good on your transmission. Sounds like your car is on life support. Your working on borrowed time. I would look at replacing it or as I said, if he's so sure how to deal with it, make him drive it from now on.

    Hello,

You are always supposed to hault the vehicle first, the 'S' gear is only intended for turning, conducting reverse routines, and when roads are potentially icy.

You should be able to just bring the lever straight from 'D' to 'S' but I wouldn't reccomend it as I have never driven an automatic transmission car before.

you can shift into anything whilst driving forwards, except into Reverse.

D, 2, 1, N... anything... just let it engage (a second or so) before hitting the gas.
