ewww...go to the Oasis for the view and drinks...not for the food. and you can go to Ruth Chris in any old city.
I have a lot of faves (and most of them you can only find in Austin or Texas):
Soul Food: Hoovers
Mexican Food: Maudies (Lamar Location) and Gueros
Fancy Mexican Food: Iron Cactus and Cantina Laredo
Sushi: Uchi
American/Brunch: South Congress Cafe (I just ate there today for the first time...AMAZING)
American Chain: Roaring Fork (the Stephen F. Austin bar upstairs has one of the best views in the city)
24 hour joint: Kerby Lane and Magnolia (both are really great and have great Austin flair)
Fusion/fancy: Roy's
Buffet: Buffet Palace
Asian: Suzi's
Bar: Cuba Libra
Movie and Dinner: Alamo Drafthouse.
Hope that helps.
happy eating.

Austin really has too many great restaurants to list just one, but I will try to narrow things down a bit and share a listing of some of my local favorites:
El Azteca - an East Austin original! Great mole, cabrito, and chipotle enchiladas. Prices are still very reasonable.
Hoover's - Great for your southern/soul food cravings. Just like grandma's cooking!
Artz Rib House - Great ribs - get the country style rib plate!
Eastside Cafe - nice quiet atmosphere, healthy, fresh, delicious.
Kyoto (downtown) - great sushi and traditional Japanese fare, very comfortable atmosphere.
Curra's - interior and coastal Mexican cuisine - a nice break from your typical tex-mex variety. A great place to meet up with friends.
Tien Hong - fine Chinese dining (not your ordinary buffet/take-out variety), also offers dim sum
Good luck and happy eating!

Uchi (sushi), Kerbey Lane (breakfast), Moonshine (Sunday brunch or dinner), Huts (burgers), Hula Hut (Hawaiian), The Driskill or South Congress Cafe (brunch), Iron Cactus (Mexican and a killer fried cheesecake)

MMMMM...
Trudy's is my pick. Burnet and 183 is my fav location. They have the BEST tex-mex in town. Get the stuffed avacado, w/queso. Not quite low fat, but OOOOH so good!!!!! Dinner for 2 is probalby around $35 to include a drink or two.

I've heard lots of good things about the Oasis.
Its a restruant that overlooks Lake Travis.
I've heard it's very romantic. People even get married there.

I don't know why, but I love Kirby Lane. It seems to be hit-or-miss with my guests, but MY food's always great! Ha ha
