Newborn's Dry Skin???
My newborn has extremely dry skin. His hands and feet are the worst - they are flaking pretty bad. They were like this when he was born (he is only 8 days old) and I feel like I am constantly rubbing lotion of him, which doesn't seem to be helping. Does anyone know if this is common and what are some other things I could try??? Anyone know how long this should last?? Any suggestions or advice would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

This is entirely normal - My daugher's skin peeled for about the first 2-3 weeks. Don't use lotion (you really want to avoid to many processed things on their skin at this stage) - use either Olive Oil (from the pharmacists, not the supermarket ) or Liquid Paraffin (again from the pharmacy but you may have to ask for it because I think it can be drunk as a laxative! - I 've always just used for my hair though, and now my daughter's skin and hair). The liquid parafin is a little heavier and more moisturising but either work well. You have to keep applying every couple of hours (every nappy change if you like) and it will eventually clear up like magic when it's ready. Don't worry about it, it is entirely normal and expected, just not mentioned in the baby books!!

They normally shed excess skin. My baby boy is 2 months and still has horribly dry skin. IT's really bad on his face.
I asked the OB and she said try a little vaseline on his cheeks and forhead...which has done wonders.
And since he also has sensitive skin I use either regular olive oil or Baby Aveeno and it does great for his body.
Avoid Johnson and Johnson lotion for now. There is alcohol in it and can be drying. Don't throw it away, just save it for later when his skin develops a little more.
Babies have less skin surface than we do so they get dry faster and they breathe faster so they lose moisture much faster.

Thats normal and it will go away on its own. By 3 weeks he will be fine. His skin is getting used to being on the outside. Lotion wont do anything for it. It isnt dry skin. But if it is driving you nuts call your doctor and ask for his advice. Oh and make sure you dont bathe him too much. That will cause dry skin.

This is normal. I freaked out when my daughter was peeling. I tried every kind of lotion and nothing worked! This will last for at least a month and maybe a little longer. Use the lotion if it makes you feel better. It won't effect your little one either way.

Our doctor told us its common and not to worry about it, he said they dont even really need lotion, but I still lathered him up lol. Try some Cetiphile, its not chemicaly at all and it hydrates for a longer time then say just baby lotion. Also space out the time between bathing, they really can go a week with out one just use a baby wipe to wipe down before jammies... it really will cut back on the dry skin. Also make sure you watch bad spots our oldest had exsama spots on his legs he has had since birth.

Its actually very common and my dr told me its not dry skin, he is peeling. It is normal and healty, and my 1 month old is still peeling in a few spots. Its not uncomfortable for them. I asked about the lotion, and its not neccessary and can actually prevent them from sweating properly in warm weather. I just use a lightweight lotion for massage and touch. Good luck!

Oh, yeah, totally normal- he's just drying out from soaking in your juices for 9 months ha ha.
Keep trying different lotions, try not to pick. Call the dr if it goes on much longer or seems pink or red or irritated.

Talk to your son's pedi. Our son got some cream from the doctor for his dry patches of skin....lotion just wasn't helping! We found out he's got sensitive skin like his daddy, but the cream she gave us was vusion or something like that...actually made for yeast infections in the diaper area, but 2 days of using it and the dry skin completely went away...that was when he was 2 months ... he's now 10 months and hasn't had dry skin since.

it normal. our pediatrician said that the dry skin pills on its own. but if it bothers you, as it does most parents, you can apply a pea size of johnson johnson baby lotion. or any baby lotion at that. make sure it is not scented to prevent allergies.

Aquaphor is terrific for babies - you can even put it on their face. You can buy it right in the drug store - maybe by the vaseline in the baby aisle. It works wonders. Don't worry - only dry skin, it will get better. Ask doc. if the Aquaphor doesn't do much, but I think it will if you keep at it.
