Internet slower than comparable computer in same LAN (Clean install with XP SP3)?
I just wiped my computer, which has very similar specs to my brother's computer. My computer used to operate on Vista, but I installed XP Home edition because I like it better. I also installed SP2, then SP3, but I'm not sure if that's relevant to the issue. We use the internet through the same router, and prior to my reformat, our internet speeds were pretty much identical.
For some reason, my internet is now noticeably slower than his. I'm pretty sure my computer is clean, as I just reformatted it (3 days ago) and I am using AVG and spybot. I'm also pretty sure I have all my drivers reinstalled, as all my hardware seems to be working.
Any idea why my internet is now slower?

EDIT: I ran some speed tests, and my down/upload speeds look okay. It seems like it might be something with my browsers, like security settings slowing down page loading time? Thanks for all the ideas guys. Hope I can get it worked out.

There may be different TCP settings for XP.
Get this and run it and click the "Optimized" settings radio button for the network adapter you use.

Also run a WAN speed test and compare it on different computers as well as your advertised speed from your ISP
Be sure you have the latest drivers for your network controller. DO a scan here, then download them from your manufacturer's website

Three possibilities that come immediately to mind:
1. You have different connections. For example, you have a wireless network and he is physically closer to the wireless router than you are. Or he has an ethernet connection to the router, while you plug into with a USB device.
2. You have different bandwidth demands. Say your ISP gives your home 2 mbps. You router doesn't allocate that bandwidth as "1 mpbs per computer". It allocates bandwidth according to demand. If your brother is downloading videos, and running a file sharing program, and sending pictures to his friends, while you are just trying to read your e-mail, you'll get the short end of the stick.
3. I had a problem with my internet connection once that I never did figure out. It took exceedingly long for it to DNS lookups (meaning, when I provided an address like "www.yahoo.com", it took a long time for it to figure out that it needed to go to "72.28.123.41", or whatever. I don't know what caused it, but I removed my internet connection and re-added it, and the problem went away.
I think you should go to DSLreports.com, and do a speed test. Then, ask you brother to shut his computer down for a minute, and do the speed test again. If you get a much better speed with your brother's computer off, then it's your brother's fault, not your computer's.
