For all intents and purposes, there were two parts to World War 2, the European battle stage with Germany and the Asian Battle stage.

The European War started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. After World War 1, Russia was basically in the grips of a civil war between the two Communist Parties, the Whites and Reds. Britain and France were both exhausted from the massive loss of life, compounded by the devastating Spanish Flu. Germany was angry due to the Treaty of Versailles which forced Germany to pay millions to Britain and France. The US isolated itself from the world stage. Then Hitler took control of Germany and Britain appeased by giving it first the Sudetenland and then the whole of Czechoslovakia. When it realised Germany was too powerful, the UK and France said if Germany invaded Poland, then war would start. Germany invaded Poland.

The Asian Battlefield is when the Japanese were angry for not getting anything for its efforts in WW1. So it invaded Manchuria, in China and conquered it and this is where war in Asia started. The new Manchuria ruler, set up by Japan was the last emperor of China.

Americans believe that WW2 started in 1941, when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour. America declared war on Japan, and Germany declared war on Germany.

So it would depend if you lived in Asia, Europe or America, to say when World War 2 started. But officially it started on the 3rd of September, 1939 as Europe was more important at the time.

    ....Seriously?!

December 1941 was the date of the Pearl Harbour attack, which more or less gave America reason to join the war.

That would be an American perspective of when the war "started", for them anyways.

As for your second question, I can't be sure, but I suppose that since it was an open question, the answer will vary depending on who you ask, for you will recieve a different answer. They say that victors write history but that doesn't mean that they are right.

Hitler made it to power. He also happened to be insane. He had his eyes on Poland and was set on it being part of greater Germany.

He told the germans that they needed "Lebensraum", which literally means space to live. In the old world, europe and eurasia, population densities are much larger than in the US, and land is a highly precious commodity, sort of akin to oil today. Thus, the lure of precious resources plus some propaganda campaign and slandering against the poles gave the invasion of Poland popular support, or at least a lack of outcry.

The US/Japan leg of the war started in December 1941 probably that is why. The war really started with the invasion of Poland in 1939.

WWII started when the Brits and French refused to stop Hitler's re-militarization of the Rhineland. Then they both Blame the Americans for not jumping in immediately after THEY screwed things up. If you remember, it was an American President (who by the way, I dislike a lot) who tried to tell the Brits and the French that if they tried to seek revenge on the Germans that there would be trouble in the future!

Yes... that is very American centric.

Just like the Euro-Centric people who would say that it started in 1939 when Germany invaded Poland.

Of course that is wrong as well.

Generally, it probably started in 1931 when Japan invaded China.

Although there are other "minor" conflicts which could also be cited as the start of the war.
