This is definitely something the police should know about. I would call them and tell them what happened and say something like "I'm not wanting to get people in trouble or anything but I've heard that this is one technique criminals use to find homes they can burglarlize, so I thought I should at least call you."
If the police are on the ball they'll come out to your neighborhood and at least ask to look at their IDs.

Call the cops.
What they're doing sounds a lot like what burglars do to case a target.

D*mn, that brings a whole new meaning to pushy.
I had people come to my apartment one day I was sleeping and htey kept knocking, I looked out the window and it was a mother andher daughter. I saw a bible in their hands. They kept knocking for 15 minutes before they finally went away.

If they actually tried to open the door, thats attempted B & E. I would call the cops, but the non emergency line, becauase if you call the emergency line and there is no emergency you can get a fine. You would have to prove that you were fearful of your safety.

thats breaking and entering, well more the attempt but yeah thats not good, call the cops or if you are afraid, deal with the situation as needed. try not to hurt them under any circumstances but if there is no choice....

Why would you come here and ask this question before you called the police.
I don't believe this at all.

They probably just opened the screen to knock harder so you could hear it and that set of the alarm.
