What temporarily spikes your blood and for how long?

I have high blood pressure and am trying to monitor it. I am excercising a bit and changing diet. Doc put me on 25 mg a day of Hyrdrochlorothiazide. I just started taking it yesterday. I have been monitoring my blood pressure throughout the day. With the readings I get, I think I should of died of a stroke by now. First off I do smoke(Terrible, Terrible yes I know Im the devil) throughout the day. I also drink coffee. Do these habits automatically ruin any accurate readings I can possibly get through the day? Is the only time to find my true BP in the morning when I first wake up before that first smoke or cup of java?

I would definitely take your BP before you smoke or ingest any caffeine. They both can affect your blood pressure a good amount. Despite what others believe, smoking actually raises your body's awareness and puts it into overdrive. Actually making you more stressed. And caffeine can dilate the vessels in the body, which deal with blood. So it may be possible.

Coffee, sugar, chocolate, alcohol, stress all elevate BP.

Stay away from canned goods and t.v. dinners. Exercise helps too.
