Do you think Liberal thinking has ever done anything good for the country?

Here are a few things I came up with:

Interstate Highway System

G.I. Bill

Labor Laws

Marshall Plan

Food Safety Laws.

Work place Safety Laws

Social Security

Peace Corps

Civil Rights Movement

Tennesee Valley Project

Woman's Right to Vote

Universal Public Education

National Weather Service

Universal Public Education

Public Labeling (Truth in advertising laws)

Public Health

Morrill Land Grant Act

Rural Electrification

Public Universities

Bank Deposit Insurance

Earned Income Tax Credit

Centers for Disease Control

Family and Medical Leave Act

Public Broadcasting

Americans with Disabilities Act

If you have taken advantage of any of the above, you can thank a Liberal.

Update:

For those of you that say Righties did the above. Please tell me which rightie.

Here's a little essay that I have posted before.

"A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE REPUBLICAN”

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and good because some liberal fought for minimum water-quality standards. With his first swallow of water, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some liberal fought to ensure their safety and that they work as advertised. All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - now Joe gets it too. He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat packing industry. In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body and how much it contained. Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air he breathes is clean because some liberal fought for the laws to stop industries from polluting our air. He walks on the government-provided sidewalk to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor. Joe begins his workday. He has a good job with excellent pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some liberal union members fought and died for these working standards. Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune. It is noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. The FSLIC federally insures Joe’s deposit because some liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who ruined the banking system before the Great Depression. Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some liberal decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime. Joe also forgets that his in addition to his federally subsidized student loans, he attended a state funded university. Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some liberal fought for car safety standards to go along with the taxpayer funded roads. He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some liberal stuck his nose where it didn't belong and demanded rural electrification. He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to. Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that his beloved Republicans have fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day. Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man who believes everyone should take care of themselves, just like I have."

This is a great list, and what most conservatives do not understand is that, at one time, liberal and conservative did not always mean Democrat or Republican, respectively.

Also, there are some in this list that were started by Republicans, but in the end, those Republicans were mostly LIBERALS. Liberals actually change things in Washington that affect the everyday American.

But in the end, all this talk about "Republicans did this" or "Democrats do that" or whatever means nothing. Get it right, conservative dunces. What we have here is a big fat list of GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS. The modern Republicans of today find that GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS suck. The answer to that kind of simplistic nonsense is shown in the list above you.

Al Franken actually did some questioning of today's Republicans and asked them to name 5 successful government programs (none of whom were even remotely centrist, let alone liberal). He got a list from each and every one of them, some that are on this list and others that are not. The point is, the government, when it's needed, comes up with solutions that benefit all Americans equally but in truth are sometimes only needed by a few of us.

Which party, of the two current ones, tries to continue these noble and very necessary programs to this very day, and also tries to create new ones when necessary, seeking redress for those that the government and industry tramples on? You guessed it. The LIBERALS.

But conservatives will continue to yammer on about how much money government wastes on stupid crap. Well guess what, slick? I don't see a single wasted dollar in this list, and we could even expand it if we wanted to.

Well I didn't look them all up but the first one is wrong! That was Republican Eisenhower! Wyoming, my home state, has had Womens voting since 1869! Don't think "todays Liberals" had much to do with it! Lets see, the National Weather Service ( different name, same game) that would have been President Grant, Republican!

My what "Liberal Propaganda"! (Edit: Kind of like Obama taking credit for Legislation he had little or nothing to do with!)

Most of the others are why we have such high taxes and so many people on welfare are and just plain don't want to work. Much easier to just have Big Brother Govt. take care of them.

Anyway, Only 6 on your dubious list that ever done anything for me! A couple of them are debatable! look at Social Security, I collect it now but had I put my contributions only into an account with 3% compound interest, I would now have far more money than I wil ever collect from SS. Now that does not count my Employers contribution.----I sure could not live on SS. It barlly pays for Medical insurance and Property Taxes ( I have a Small home)! How would I eat etc. Well I manage quite well because of my Company pension and my 401K and other savings/investment accounts. I never expected the Govt. to take care of me, Good Thing!

Sorry (Not really) just how see it, Hey I voted for Eisenhower!

Now, Tell me which of these WARS were started (US entered) by Democrats or Rebublicans:

    WW I

    WW II

    Korea

    Vietnam

    Afghanistan

    Iraq

Tough question? Not really they were all Democrat except Afghanistan! WRONG! I hear you shouting. How about Iraq? well how about it? In Oct. 1998 The US Congress passed and Bill Clinton Signed a bill making "Regime change in Iraq" the official USA policy. In Dec. 1998 Clinton Ordered the first bombing of Iraq, Operation Desert Fox! Don't believe me, then go Google it and read Clinton's speech in Dec. 1998 when he gave the order.

Edit for a couple of early posters:------ In 1776 a Conservative would have been someone supporting the "English Crown" A Liberal would have supported "Independence". Please go look up the meaning of the word "Conservative" before making such a DA statement!----You make my "Tired" ache!

Yet another Edit:---You forgot "NAFTA" (Clinton) or was that left off the list on purpose?

Yes. And right wing politicians rave about little government regulation then whine when corporations import poisonous toys and dog food into the country. We need liberal laws that protect people rather than republican laws that protect the corporations.

Where do people get off calling liberals Marxist? Where does this innate foolishness come from?

If you can sleep at night without worry think conservative!!!!!

In the past 8 years under Bush more Americans are afraid of attack then even during the Cold War. That's today's conservatism. Keep the people scared!!

  • How do you think about the answers? You can sign in to vote the answer.
  • People from all sides of the political arena have contributed to our way of life. The problem with government involvement is the lack of control or too much control.

For example, I knew a man who retired and was drawing a check from Social Security. This was about ten years ago and I understand the laws were more strick about how much you were paid according to how much you are presently making. This man had a very nice house and another house in another state for a summer home. And, he earned lots of money and drew his Social Security check.

The loophole was "passive income" was not included in his earnings. (Passive was the word his secretary used. This included rent money from dwellings and commercial property.) In other words, a rich person could still receive their quota from Social Security.

In my opinion, if you pay it, you should be able to reap the benefits now matter how much money you earn. But, the government controls who gets it when and how much. I do not care for this. And, we all have heard stories on fraud and scams.

I believe we should assist our fellow man with improving their lot in life. I don't believe we should just give assistance when people are sitting down.

Im SO tired of people bringing up stupid things like voting rights, worker rights, civil rights, womans right, gay rights, abolition of slavery, science, medicine, technology, social justice, social security, the arts and all that crap. What has it done for straight rich white males? We need to get back to out roots. Name one liberal that has done anything good for this country.

How can God leave if he's omnipotent and all loving? I'm an Atheist but I think you misunderstand the concept of your own God

A DAY IN THE LIFE OF JOE NEOCON:

Joe gets up at 6 a.m. and fills his coffeepot with water to prepare his morning coffee. The water is clean and safe because some tree-hugging liberal fought for maximum water-quality standards.

With his first swallow of coffee, he takes his daily medication. His medications are safe to take because some stupid commie liberal fought to insure their safety and that they work as advertised.

All but $10 of his medications are paid for by his employer's medical plan because some liberal union workers fought their employers for paid medical insurance - and now Joe gets it, too.

He prepares his morning breakfast, bacon and eggs. Joe's bacon is safe to eat because some girlie-man liberal fought for laws to regulate the meat-packing industry.

In the morning shower, Joe reaches for his shampoo. His bottle is properly labeled with each ingredient and its amount in the total contents because some crybaby granola liberal fought for his right to know what he was putting on his body.

Joe dresses, walks outside and takes a deep breath. The air is clean because some environmentalist wacko liberal fought for laws to stop industries from polluting our atmosphere.

He walks to the subway station for his government-subsidized ride to work. It saves him considerable money in parking and transportation fees because some fancy-pants liberal fought for affordable public transportation, which gives everyone the opportunity to be a contributor.

Joe begins his work day. He has a good job with good pay, medical benefits, retirement, paid holidays and vacation because some commie leftist union members fought and died for these working standards.

Joe's employer pays these standards because Joe's employer doesn't want his employees to call the union. If Joe is hurt on the job or becomes unemployed, he'll get a worker compensation or unemployment check because some ridiculous liberal didn't think he should lose his home because of his temporary misfortune.

It's noontime and Joe needs to make a bank deposit so he can pay some bills. Joe's deposit is federally insured by the FDIC because some godless liberal wanted to protect Joe's money from unscrupulous bankers who gamed the banking system just before the Great Depression.

Joe has to pay his Fannie Mae-underwritten mortgage and his below-market federal student loan because some liberal whiner decided that Joe and the government would be better off if he was educated and earned more money over his lifetime.

Joe is home from work. He plans to visit his father this evening at his farm home in the country. He gets in his car for the drive. His car is among the safest in the world because some America-hating liberal traitor fought for car safety standards.

He arrives at his boyhood home. His was the third generation to live in the house financed by Farmers' Home Administration because bankers didn't want to make rural loans. The house didn't have electricity until some big-government liberal (FDR) stuck his nose where it didn't belong and created the rural electrification act.

He is happy to see his father, who is now retired. His father lives on Social Security and a union pension because some wine-drinking, quiche-eating liberal made sure he could take care of himself so Joe wouldn't have to.

Joe gets back in his car for the ride home, and turns on a radio talk show. The radio host keeps saying that liberals are bad and conservatives are good. He doesn't mention that the beloved conservative Republicans fought against every protection and benefit Joe enjoys throughout his day.

Joe agrees: "We don't need those big-government liberals ruining our lives! After all, I'm a self-made man! All Americans should take care of themselves, just as I have.

As said before,it depends on you definition of a "liberal". The liberals of 1789 are not the liberals of today. Liberals of today are mostly Marxist. And for the record, most of the things on your list Congress was not granted the power to do by the Constitution and are by definition illegal.

Update: You asked for some proof that Conservatives did some of this list. The biggest is the civil rights movement. Take a look at this link and you will be shocked.

Update II: Warren H. Atherton, "The father of the GI Bill" Was a Republican from CA see 2nd link.

Update III: Woodrow Wilson pushed hard to have the 19th Amendment ratified. While he wasn't what I call a Conservative, he still a republican.. See link III.

I hope this will show the libs here that the history they think they know is not true. Time to to do some reading people!!

    Aside from FOUNDING the country?

Don't forget your seatbelt (thanks, Nader...)

Republicans and conservatives are not the same... but people don't really seem to understand that about liberals... why is that?

Baron Von - shame on you... you know that was not "liberals"... it may have been democrats, but liberals say "live and let live as long as you don't hurt someone else." (unless you're talking about the abolition of slavery... which is probably what you meant... so, nevermind).

Just like Tipper Gore's "censor laws" on music... not really very liberal...
