Transitioning out of government job to private: How did you do it?

I currently work in city government and have advanced to the top. I moved up so fast that I only have 2 years of procurement and 1 year of financial analysis, now I'm executive director. I'm not happy wit hthe money I make and I need to get another job. I have BA in Econ, MS in Tech Mgmt - IT, and an MBA. I've been all over the job boards and talked to people in my network and nothing has come up in over 3 months.... What else can/should I do??

The job market is tough right now, so it will take longer to find the right job that is willing to hire you. Might be better to finish out the year in your current role, keep up w/ your contacts, and look aggressively for a job in early 2009.

    Other suggestions:

-- Find a good headhunter that specializes in your field of interest -- consulting, finance, computers, accounting, etc. Whatever you are targeting. They can often find roles that you won't find as well as advise you on your resume, interview technique, and corporate knowledge.

-- Go back to basics and try the career center at your MBA program. They sometimes have relationships w/ key corporate employers in the closest city.

-- Focus your job search on 1 or 2 sorts of roles. It's easier to find a job when you're concentrating, rather than applying broadly.

-- Find an industry or affiliate group and join them. Anything called "Society of" or the like. They also have good networks and sometimes have job boards.

    Good luck!
