How would you make this better?

I ran over an old ladys cat today. It was an accident and I couldnt stop in time. I stopped and picked him up because he was still alive, but he died in my car a few minutes later. I managed to find his home and I went to tell the lady what had happened. Turns out it was her husbands cat and he passed away recently. Of course now I feel terrible. Both for the cat and her. How do I make this right. She seemed so sad and lonely

Update:

I did bury it for her because she just didnt have it in her. ive been crying since it happened. i will go around tomorrow and see what i can do

I think you have already went above and beyond what most people would do. It may not feel like you did much, but really most people (excluding those who would go out of their way to hit an animal) would just keep driving, not stop. Letting the lady know what happened to her cat, that you did stop and tried to help it, and that it didn't die alone already is a big gift.

I agree that a new cat isn't the best option. If you want to offer it is a nice gesture, but I'm sure if she wants anew cat, she'd get one. It would be better for you to try remain friendly with her if she is lonely, help with mowing the lawn or other things that are getting difficult for her to do.

I would make the gesture of a donation to a local humane shelter or cat rescue in her husbands name, I think that would be appropriate and meaningful. And other cats would benefit, without her taking responsibility of a new one in an already difficult time.

Ask her if there is anything you could do for her. She may need company more than a cat. Maybe offer to help her around the house with something or just sit and talk for a little while. You could ask her if she wants you to get her a new cat. However most older people have a cat b/c they have had it for a while and a new one might be too much work for her...but you could offer. Or if she does want another one maybe go to a local shelter and find an older cat that likes older people and is already fixed and has it's shots.

I would offer her your condolences and let her know that you are very sorry.

Try not to feel TOO bad because you didn't know it was the woman's late husband's cat...and you didn't do it on purpose. As horrible as it is, things do happen.

Offer her any help around the house or offer her some company if she seems lonely. I doubt she would want another cat or kitten but if you felt that she did, offer to get her one.

I am very sorry that this has happened to you. It must be very heart-breaking :(

Bless your heart. That had to have been horrible. You did all you could do, more than some people would do. I think you should just leave it alone. I don't know if I would want to see the person that hit my cat. Remember it was totally an accident.

Great answer Cat Lover, blame the lady who just lost her husband and their cat! Show some compassion!

The obvious answer is to get the cat stuffed and put it on her porch. Or, better yet,go to the SPCA and buy her a dog!

If she's going to let the cat roam the streets and get hit by a car, she doesn't deserve a cat. You've done all you need to do. It's up to her loved ones to help her with the grieving process.

get her a cat from the shelter because if she is old then she wont live as long as a cat so get a sort of old cat like 8-10 years old and give that to her. Make sure the cat is healthy though. good luck

you did all you could, most people unfortunatly would just keep on driving. honestly, the old lady was 100% to blame for this, if she had kept her cat inside like she is suppost to this would never have happend. I feel sorry for all that you have gone through.

You can offer to buy her another kitten. might not be her husbands cat... but it is still something to share some love with! Maybe she might like that.
