Confusion over cooking words/terms?
I like to peruse the recipes & ideas here ,but i'm often mystified by some American words & terms used in cooking. For instance 'broil', which I have worked out is what we Aussies called grill. Now I want to know the difference, if any, in frosting & icing. We say we are going to put icing on our cake, & that is a mix made from icing sugar mixture, butter & whatever flavour you choose. What can you Americans tell me about this?
Well what you call your oven broiler we call our griller. Cooked over flames is BBQ here.

Well, I think you've got it.
Frosting and icing are used interchangeably. Sometimes we use icing to describe a thin layer of frosting as you'd find on a decorated Christmas cookie.
Broil means to expose directly to the heat. Practically speaking in an American kitchen it means to put the food under a very high temperature heat source. A typical American cooking range either the oven can be heated to 500 degrees heat or there's a separate broiler compartment (about 1/4 the size of the oven) that can get that hot.
I think of grilling as cooking outdoors over a fire or coals contained in some matter. There's a grill or rack over the fire and that where the steaks, hot dogs and burgers go.
And since I just don't know everything, this might help you.

I always thought the words were interchangeable, but did some research and found they are 2 different things.
Frosting vs. Icing
There is a big difference between frosting and icing. Frosting is thick and holds shapes like rosettes and shells like those you see piped around the edges of a birthday cake. It remains soft to the touch and has a creamy texture, and most people think it tastes better because of the creamy buttery flavor. Icing, on the other hand, is a thinner, more liquid substance, and as it dries it thins out, becomes very smooth across the surface of your cookie, and hardens. This is the icing to use for the most beautiful, professional results.

Frosting or icing, same stuff.
Broiling-- I usually say I'm broiling something when I cook it indoors in the oven, but with only the top element on. (If its an electric oven. If it's gas I broil it in the lower part of the oven under the flame. I do grilling outside on the grill with the fire ( or coals) under the item to be grilled. Hope u understand this. It even sounds confusing to me. lol

To me, an American, broil means to put under a broiler. Like an oven broiler. Only heat from the top and very high.
To grill, is over an open flame with grates with heat from below. (Or a large stainless steel surface like in Japanese restaurant). Or a grill pan or George Foreman grill with formed grill ridges.
BBQ can mean a lot of different things in the U.S. It can mean the meat. Which in Texas is usually beef briscuit, in Kansas City it's beef ribs and here in eastern North Carolina it's chopped pork. I cook pork BBQ/pork shoulder on the grill. Low and slow for 7 hours. If I used high heat I would call it grilling.

OK - I think I will be able to help you out here. as an Australian you are used to english cooking expressions (I'm English) frosting is soft icing. In England we have icing and butter icing (which I think is frosting but I am not certain) I say this all the time but you really should try the BBC/food website. It has all the conversions from imperial to americam to metric and also a glossary index - I couldn't cook without it

We broil in our ovens under the "broiler" element which is another heating element in the top of the oven. Frosting and icing are the same thing.

Frosting is a term as for that it is whipped and thick. Icing is made with powder sugar and is cooked...as for the recipe for 7 min icing...They are rather the same but icing is really for cinnamon rolls, danishes, aand small cakes. Frosting is for cakes, and cupcakes.

frosting is a sweet glaze made of sugar that often also contains butter, water, egg whites, milk, or flavorings and is used to cover or decorate baked goods, such as cakes or cookies.
so yeah, frosting and icing are basically the same thing, except frosting is generally softer, and doesnt harden like some icings do.
good luck!!!

icing hardens and is more thick and you usually stick it on cookies while frosting is more fluffy and doesn't harden the same way and you stick it on cakes. I think people just mix them up allot.

Be specific...? Is it regarding the Shia beliefs...? If yes maybe consult a Scholar or something.
