Refined sugar elevates LDL (bad cholesterol), reduces HDL (good cholesterol) and causes mild memory loss?

Apparently, refined sugar elevates LDL (bad cholesterol), reduces HDL (good cholesterol), contributes to mild memory loss, increases overall cholesterol and increases systolic blood pressure. See items 7, 41, 42, 57 and 130 in http://www.rheumatic.org/sugar.htm .

Should we throw away the sugar bowl and stop eating cakes, cookies, biscuits, desserts, chocolate, icecream and so on, which would also help to lose weight (if you are overweight), or should we just shrug it off and forget about it?

Susan you will certainly linger longa in Yarrawonga if you use your common sense. moderation is the name of the game. Over consumption of all your sugar rich except dark chocolate, at least 70% cocoa, will guarantee later onset illness conditions.

The foods proven to prevent dementia are spinach, all brassica family (folates), fish oil or oily fish but not tuna, proven to cause dementia. Green Tea,and a host of other antoxidants. Add egg yolks rich in acetycholine, phosphatydilserine and more and you are on the way. Gingko Biloba is also a winner, but not over the counter, i prescribe only Metagenics. See metagenics.com.au.

Inflammation is more and more seen as a determinant A recent study, which is part of the larger Framingham Heart Study, involved 691 healthy people with an average age of 79. Blood tests determined whether the participants had signs of inflammation. Then the participants were followed for an average of seven years. During that time, 44 of the participants developed Alzheimer's disease.

The participants' blood was tested for levels of cytokines, which are protein messengers that trigger inflammation. Those with the highest amount of cytokines in their blood were more than twice as likely to develop Alzheimer's disease as those with the lowest amount of cytokines. A total of 28 percent of the women and 30 percent of the men had high levels of cytokines, yet they made up 42 percent of the cases of Alzheimer's disease.

"These results provide further evidence that inflammation plays a role in the development of Alzheimer's disease," said study author Zaldy Tan, MD, MPH, of Harvard Medical School in Boston. "The production of these cytokines may be a marker of future risk of Alzheimer's

My father and his father both died of dementia and had it before my present age. I have broken the mold and am headed for at least 120 years because my current biological (real) age is at least 20 years under my chronological age.

But then that is what I do for a living.

Hi Susan , No I would think if we restrict our intake of overly refined foods (white bread) etc & like what u have mentioned and instead ate more natural foods and vegetables, fruits, legumes etc. The instance of Type 2 Diabetes would not be so prevalent in todays fast food society In other words everything in moderation and then only as a treat when it comes to sugary ,salty foods.,♥
