Wishes for fishes?

What does the saying "wishes for fishes" or "fishes for wishes" mean? Where does it originate from?

I heard it the other day and I have no idea!

Thanks!

It originated from author, Doug Horton

If wishes were fishes we'd all be throwing nets. If wishes were horses we'd all ride. ~ Doug Horton

    he also did this one:

“If you love something let it go free. If it doesn't come back, you never had it. If it comes back, love it forever.”

    It is a proverb.

If wishes were fishes, we'd all cast nets in the sea.

An adaptation of the older version is : "If wishes were fishes, we would all be swimming the oceans!"
