what's the best way for a 44 year old male to lose belly fat?

I know stop eating crap - well I'm going on a "nearly" vegetarian diet - - - only fish and poultry - nothing fried - very low fat diet - no dairy products

I'm riding a bike about 45 minutes a day - each morning and again in the evening

Any other ideas?

Update:

I don't drink beer - however I've been known to have a margarita on vacation or say (once or twice a month) - - - not an alcohol drinker - none in my house!

    It sounds like you're doing the right things. Due to our "American Diet" many of us develop insulin resistance (IR). I recently read a statistic that as many as 3/4 of adults will have some degree of IR!!!!!!!!! That seems high and I have not asked my doc about it yet, but I will. The symptoms of IR include:

    Fatigue, belly fat, brain fog, high BP, insomnia, hypoglycemia, depression, and other stuff.

    IR can be checked with blood tests: 12-14 hour fast; followed by a glucose challenge (drink 75 grams of sugar); then have glucose and insulin levels checked while fasting, then one hour and two hours after glucose challenge.

    IR can be REVERSED with diet and exercise and also medication if needed. Unchecked IR will turn into type 2 diabetes. So, if you are "overweight" and even if you are not overweight, have your doc check your IR status. Controlling IR should resolve belly fat issues. Keep in mind, even "skinny" people can be IR. It's genetic and our American diet makes it worse.

    I've tried many diets and couldn't make anything work. Since having my first child, I've been carrying around an extra 30 pounds. This diet just made sense and showed me that everything I was doing before was wrong and a waste of my time.

    Well my husand is 46 and he has the same problem, but he's a drinker, I think if you drink alcohol, you'll have a belly no matter what. But I did hear from a trainer that your fat has to go somewhere, so the more you work out your upper and lower body, what does that leave. Focus on your tummy only for a while, of course with cardio too. Good Luck!!

    The dreaded STOMACH CRUNCH. Not sit ups, it's like half a sit up.

    Sit backs are where you are sitting backwards on a folding chair and you lean back and hold for 5 seconds, then return upright. Do it for 30 reps two or three times a day every other day.

    Tim Ferriss has some interesting information on losing fat while gaining muscle.

  • the only way to lose weight is to burn more calories than you are taking in. It doesn't matter how much you ride that bike if you don't eat healthy and watch what you are taking in. one trip to mcdonald's will ruin 2 day's of riding a bike! then, it take's time. your body will lose weight in all the wrong places first, cause the muscle's will pull energy from around them, so wherever you are strongest( and probably don't need it) will lose the stored energy. building muscle in the target area is key, and again, that will take time.

    Muscle-building exercises, like lifting weights, before cycling. Studies have found they raise the metabolism for more hours than cardio alone, plus adding muscle tissue will raise your basal metabolism so you are burning more calories 24/7.

    If your abs are loose so they look fatter than they really are (can you pull in your stomach significantly?), tighten the transverse abdominus muscles with exercises like the plank (ie pronated bridge) - lie on the floor on your forearms and toes, keep the whole body straight, practice until you can hold it for at least a minute.

    Well, do you drink beer? I bet you do...in that case, you know where the extra calories are coming from...

    Riding a bike is an excellent way to burn calories, since the leg muscles are the largest muscles in the body and therefore burn the most. You are not working on your CORE muscles however, or your upper body.

    When you want to lose weight, it is important to not just do 1 type to activity. Your body gets used to it and you quickly plateau out...mix it up...bike one day, lift weights the next, do crunches, run, etc...vary your routine so you keep your body guessing...you will see quicker results this way!     you actully should eat some (not a lot) dairy product. like drink milk (or slim milk for lactose intolerant) also, eat more vegetables, and fruits as snacks. like watermelon. eat that for a snack because it's not much of anything, just mainly water. also, if you feel hungry, then drink water or juice. that makes your stomach think your full (but dont do this too often) because it's filled with something.
