Is the Twilight series really worth all the hype?

Sometimes, a brilliantly written story causes a huge sensation. Harry Potter, for example. JK Rowling is an exceptional writer and story-teller, and she uses many advanced literary techniques in her writing. She is worth the fanatical response. But I feel like the Twilight books are not so well-written. It is a good story, and a cool idea, but I feel like Stephanie Meyer isn't really that good of a writer.

So I'd just like to open up some discussion here, does anyone disagree with me? Does anyone agree? Please support your ideas…

Update:

I have read the books many times...I'm actually a huge fan. It is an amazing story. But as a student well-trained in literary analysis, I can't help but notice ways that she could have told it better.

I've also read the Harry Potter series many times, and it seems like every time I realize some deeper meaning, some hidden symbolism, some sneaky foreshadowing, etc. that I missed before.

I just don't think that the Twilight series is as deserving of the devoted fans...the story is great, yes, but it is not rare to find someone with a great story idea. What is rare is someone with the ability to tell the story in a way that lives up to it, and I don't think Stephanie Meyer does this.

Update 2:

Just a few ways that JK Rowling is a great writer:

1) Foreshadowing: There are so many suble little hints that most people just skim right over, but then they play a huge part in a later book.

2) Word play: Many of the names, places, and spells have humorous or ironic roots, or a double meaning.

3) Characterization: Readers feel like they know the main characters personally, and can relate to them. Also, the characters are all very deep and have different levels, there are no stock characters.

4) Something not a lot of people notice: The reading levels of the books actually progress along with the characters and probably many readers (Including myself) The first few were written for children, with smaller words, lighter material, less complicated story lines, but then as the characters age and prepare to enter an adult world, the books begin to read more and more like a novel written for adults.

I'm out of space...

It really is worth it. I have to disagree. I thought that the Twilight books were very well written. It made you feel like you were there, watching all those events happening. And Twilight has been compared to Harry Potter so obviously it is as good. Plus, its a national best seller! and getting made into a movie!

i don't think that J K Rowling had such a good writing style actually, i thought that she had a good idea but not an exceptional writing style in my opinion... but that was just because she used a lot of the same words and descriptions, though i guess she had to as the book was also aimed at kids...

i personally really like the Twilight series (well, to be fair i'm only on the second book, but i really like it so far!) i know what you mean though.. when i first picked it up i was so BORED in the first chapter, and i think that it was really poorly written, but then i carried on and really enjoyed the book. i think she can go into too much detail on occasions, like when she described Bella and Edward eating at the resturant in Twilight and she described the mushrooms... i just thought 'i don't care cut to the dialougue!!' but other than that i'd personally say that she's a better writer than JK Rowling...although i'm not that much of a Harry Potter fan myself, and prefer vampires over wizards so maybe i'm a little biast ;)

I think had the story been done by a better author and had some o the ideas actually been more original I would have really liked the story. But Stephenie Meyer's terrible writing style and abuse of adjectives along with the cliche story and extremely Mary Sue characters make this book impossible to like.

I totally agree with you. While I too found Harry Potter to be well written with great plot twists and well thought out story lines, I felt the Twilight series to be an amusing, straightforward series of tween novels...

Twilight managed to hook me, and I became fond of it- until Yahoo Answers and school was over burdened by the series. I knew it wasn't nearly as good as Harry Potter, but the way people treat it- you'd think it was something amazing. I havn't read the books in months but I've managed to forget a lot of it already. It's kind of hopeless. It's over hyped, but not an amazing piece of literature.

I feel Twilight is greatly overated. People go on like it is the best book since life spread but look at other books. Lord of the Rings, you cannot possibly compare the two. I don't think it is that great of a book, I am not shy on my personal opinion, that's why everybody is different, some people like the book, others don't.

No, twilight is not worth the hype. And neither is Harry Potter. Advanced literary techniques? Seriously?

  • It's totally worth the hype. It's as good as Harry Potter (Those seires and To Kill a Mocking Bird are my favorite books!)

    I personally liked the books.

I do think people overhyped the books. Making it seem like it was the greatest book ever written. Everyone has different opinions on books.

Yeah! :-) Twilight is SO worth all the hype.

A good book doesn't always have to be well-written, there are many things that make a great read. And Twilight (I think it's well-written, but I can see why a bunch of other people don't :-) ) is not one of the most well-written books, but it is still one of the best books ever. :-)
