How to get some father's right's help?

I am writing on behalf of my best friend. He has a four year old son who is he currently paying to much child support for. He was never with his son;s mother, but has lived up to his responsibility ever since he found out he had a son. When he hired an attorney to go to court to set child support, unfortunately he was misrepresented. His attorney did not represent him properly there for his child support was set so high it cost him his house and almost his car. After losing his job for bout six moths h is finally working again. However with the back child support on top of the already to high amount he is basically working just to pay his son;s mother. The problem with that is she doesn't even hardly see her son. He is currently being raised manly by her parents and his father. My friend would like to have her declared unfit so he and her parents can work out a custody arrangement. He has no problem paying child support, but would prefer to pay it to her pets so he knows it;s going to his son. Even though all the stress of the too high child support and absent mother He still continues to see and have relationship with his son on a regular basis. However, he can;t currently afford and attorney to modify the order right now. He is at his wits end working for nothing, he is about to give up. If you could help I know he would greatly appreciate it.

Yeah, that's a bad situation. Unfortunately, i don't really think there's much to be done. Once a child support order is in affect, It's really hard to get it changed. If he's making less money now, than when he went to court in the first place, they MAY modify it a little, but I doubt it. If he is backed up on child support, they will also add interest to the past due. My husband and I were in a similar situation. We also have a 7 year old together, and he has a 9 year old from a previous marriage. It was such a mess, we hardly ever saw his child because the mother would not show up to drop him. We tried to have the support order lowered, due to the fact that we had another child to care for as well. It was useless. We all went to court, and nothing was changed. They didn't care about any of our financials. We basically just had to suck it up and pay the same amount. We're now caught up. It's a little lower because we are no longer making payments + past due payments. We weren't able to get our income tax return for about 6 years. Therefore, we also had to pay the money for my my 7 year old whom we claimed on our taxes. It was very hard, trying to get any modifications was just a waste of time to go to court. now, we still never see or hardley speak with the child, but we still pay every week. It's a really messed up situation, but from my experience, there is no such thing as fathers rights. It doesn't matter. It didn't even matter that my child had to go without. No Help Whatsoever. There are child support guidelines though and they can't take more than 50% of his paycheck.
