My car is shaking when I brake?

I have a 2005 Pontiac Sunfire. It has about 44,000 miles on it. Recently, when I start to brake, my car starts to shake - I can feel it in the pedal, my dash board and stearing wheel are starting to shake a lot now too. I'd like to have some type of idea what the problem is before I take it in because I know nothing about cars.

The break rotors are warped. They can possible be turned (ground down) or replaced if they are too warped to be turned.

The causes are overheating from excessive breaking and or rotors being submerged in water while hot.

Brake rotors that are in excess of allowable limits of variations from parallel. I know that sounds like a mouth full, but it's a technical term for the rotors need to be trued. Allowable limits are about .004 and when you exceed that limit, the pulsation begins, the greater the vibration, the more out of limits the rotors are. At you current mileage, you are probably close to needing brake pads as well, truing the rotors is part of a brake job, so get the brakes done and fix both problems at one time.

    Two words: warped rotors

You either have to replace or resurface the rotors. While machining ( or resurfacing ) the rotors is usually the cheaper option, it cannot always be done and if it can be done, it will severly cut down on the life expectancy of the rotors. It is usually cheaper in the long run just to replace the brake rotors.

Most likely the front brake rotors are warped. Take in to get checked can turn rotors if thick enough or if pads are low may have to do a front brake job.

Your brake rotors are probably warped. This happens (usually) if the mechanic over torqued the lug nuts.

FIX: get a brake job with resurfaced rotor (machined). Make sure they do not over torque it next time (no impact wrench to tighten the lug nuts.)

    Good Luck...

It could also be you Idler arm's and strut's. They have rubber gasket's that wear out over time. Good new is the part's aren't expensive. If you just get the brake's inspected I'm sure your mechanic will catch it.
