Would being stupid be smart?

Ok, this is a bit of a stupid question, but I want to see what YOU people think about this. Have you ever heard the saying ignorance is bliss? Well, as I'm sure you know, it basically means you are sometimes better off not knowing. Like in a situation where your spouse had an affair and you would likely be happier off without knowing that...

So, since genuine happiness that doesn't hurt anyone is one of the most sought out things in the universe, would it be smart to be stupid (actually, a better word for this situation is ignorant)...Would it be smart to be ignorant if happiness is what you seek? If you knew everything in the world, you would likely be very sad and depressed about how bad the world is. If you didn't know much about the world and lived in the moment (like a kid), then you would generally be happier.

Do you agree with the statement ignorance is bliss?

Do you think that it is sometimes smart to be ignorant?

All opinions appreciated. Thank you...

Update:

After looking at these answers, heres what I think. Sometimes it is good to be ignorant. But,

1. We as people tend to find a certain happiness in knowing.

2. I would probably be happier knowing the bad then not knowing the bad but convinced that something horrible is happening.

3. If humans were ignorant all the time, where would we be today? I bunch of bad people would be in the world and worse things could be happening.

4. Whether something is happy or not is based on your perspective (ex. is the glass half-empty or half-full). I suppose that is where happiness lies the most.

More often than we would like, unfortunately.

Hmm...that is a good question. I suppose that in some cases, yeah, it is better off to be ignorant. And if we could all go through this world without knowing the bad, would there ever be anyone to fix the bad? Or would there just never be any bad if we were all "happy"? I don't really think it's possible to be so sheltered from the world that one would always be ignorantly happy, and those that come off as that generally annoy everyone who is tuned in to current affairs!

So maybe being ignorant isn't the smartest thing...even if it makes you happy. I think finding happiness among the bad things can make one even happier.

I suppose that you would be happier not knowing certain things. It's a hard question to answer because you can also view it from another standpoint. Using your example: Would allowing your partner to have an affair be okay with you?

I guess what i'm trying to say is: You could be happier without knowing certain things, but you have to be okay with the fact that you may be allowing somebody else to do something wrong because you won't be able to take action and stop it.

    Would being stupid be smart?

You DID see the episode of Family Guy in which Peter Griffin forgot how to sit down, right?

If you are so dumb you forget how to sit down, no, that would not be smart.

    I disagree.

I think it would not do our intelligence justice. We are very fortunate to have been born with objective perspectives while all other life to the best of our knowledge does not exceed first order volitions.

I think the trick is to seek knowledge to fulfill our purposes to their fullest potential.

The very notion that our purpose in life is to seek happiness is a contentious one. Socrates said that we should not seek to be happy, but to be right. I believe that it is right for us to seek wisdom in life.

Yet simultaneously a life of misery and depression caused by our knowledge of the world would be a sad thing in and of itself. I try to balence the two and acknowledge that while knowing the atrocious evils of this world and the reality of the political illusions all over the world, there is so much happiness and beauty everywhere you look.

One of my personal favourite quotes is that "It's only when you look up at the stars that you realize how insignificant our problems really are."

Furthermore, building on top of Socrates' philosophy the one who calls himself wise because he thinks he knows everything is a fool and the one who calls himself a fool is wise because he knows he knows nothing.

So even if you are sad because you think you know so many things, dont be, because you probably don't know that much anyway.

It's a hard statement to agree with. It depends what you are being ignorant with, as it is different in different cases.

If you are not ignorant and are "in the know", then it doesn't necessarily mean you aren't happy. You might be happy that you know something.

But saying that, knowledge is sometimes hurtful and you can be better off without it. I find the statement one you can't really agree with because it is so two-sided. As I said, it really depends on the circumstance.

I suppose to go along with the quoting game "The grass is always greener."

We can always wonder what the other side would be like, but we're already set in our paths, to be ignorant, or to be knowing, but I don't think we can ever know which is better until someone finds a way to relive moments differently.

I think this would only apply to those who have this negative outlook on the actual world. Once you know things, then you make judgements on whether they're good or bad. You saying "how bad the world is" is an opinion, that's really what happiness depends on.

Happiness is what you make it, if you want it to depend on what is offered to you, you must be one who is incapable of making decisions on your own.

If you can see the world for what it really is, and then allow yourself to either be depressed by it or chose to overcome the difficult things and see the better things, THAT is true happiness.

it would be clever, smart is the exact opposite to stupid, and if you were smart there would be alto more that we knew so therefor we would know that there's a Lot more to worry about

so its true ignorance is bliss.... :)

I totally agree. To gain knowledge you have to sacrifice a sense of happiness. Also the more you learn the more innocence you lose. But humans by nature are curious and thirst for knowledge, and the bliss cannot last.

    I agree.

Too much knowledge can prohibit growth and be very overwhelming.

Sometimes I wish I was like everyone else, why must I seek knowledge knowing full well its detrimental to my health?

Its hard to function in this society knowing what I know.
