Solar panels depends on the sun to store sort of heat energy and convert that energy into electric energy, as simple as that

If you know how they work, then what do you mean by "why"?

They work the way they were designed and built. They are not human, they do not need a "why", a reason, to do something, they do it because they were designed and manufactured to do what they do.

Or are you trying to ask: "Why were they designed to do what they do?" or "Why were they manufactured to do what they do?"

In that case the answer is also obvious, they were designed and manufactured to convert sunlight to electrical power, because a company or an individual saw that that product would be useful and could be sold for a lot of money.

Perhaps you should be more specific.
