Star Wars dilema?
Okay, I am a big big fan of the old three. Take that back, New Hope is cool, Empire is one of the best movies ever, Return is okay but goes a bit too far with the muppets sometimes. and I only like the origins, ot the 90's remakes. ANYWAY, in Empire, why does Yoda have to "remind" Obi Wan that Luke is NOT the last hope, "there is another." Obi Wan was at LUke and Leia's birth, so he knows Luke is not the last Skywalker. In Return Luke asks Leia if she remembers her mother, and she says she remembers her as being sad. Padme died at their birth, right, so how does she remember her mother? I know the prequels come many years after the originals but it just bothers me that a few things escaped their attention when they were trying to create this story line. Are these just some over sights? And, yes, I know I am being too picky.
@SaberBlade, no no no, he DID know about Leia, they all knew about Leia, because in Revenge of the Sith, they all knew she was born and they all knew she went off with Jimmy Smitts (Organa). And I think she said "you served WITH my father in the clone wars..." but I am probably wrong about that. But I get you, she was kind of old to suddenly start training, it would have been a long shot.
Sister Blue Eyes, yeah I know! Padme just up and died because her whiney husband roughed her up there at the end, she was all sad and had a broken heart? Screw that, she had her kids, she had reasons to live. She had been a queen and a strong leader up until he choked her. Maybe he choked her too hard. I think Lucas or whoever was just running out of ways to get rid of her.
@ the ghost, YEAH, he should have remembered the droids, too. But you know R2 was always kind of sneaky, hiding info from C3P0, never letting him in on what was going on, purposely not playing the whole Leia message until Obi Wan found them. C3p0 wasn't telling the whole truth to Luke in New Hope about where they came from, saying not to listen to R2 because he was full of crap--I mean dust. And Obi-Wan seemed just a little bit vague when he found them and suddenly "fixed" R2's message. Maybe they all just weren't letting on that they knew each other. But then again New Hope was over 30 years ago. I don't think Lucas had dreamed up the other three movies way back then.

You're not being too picky ... you're showing that you are a fan and have questions. That happens to a lot of people who become Star Wars fans ... lol ...
I also think that a couple of the answers you have got so far are from people who using only data from the original 3 movies ... it's actually kind of hard to answer most of these questions without using data from the movies and all the books that have come out but it will make more sense that way ... I hope anyways, I tend to ramble a little bit ... lol ... so, here we go ...
1. ANYWAY, in Empire, why does Yoda have to "remind" Obi Wan that Luke is NOT the last hope, "there is another."
-This one is kind of easy but NOT if you only use info from the OT (Original Trilogy). Remember, at that time in 1980 we didn't even know that Vader was Luke's father let alone that Leia was his sister. I agree, if you use what was learned in the prequels this question should have Yoda smacking Obi-Wan up side the head and saying "Moron you are ... remember not that there were twins born" ... if you add in a little history of how the Star Wars story was developed the plot thickens. When Lucas first started with the Star Wars story he had 12 parts and wanted to do them like the old Flash Gordon series but realized that that wouldn't work so he cut it down to three trilogies. The first trilogy was to be about the rise and fall of Anakin Skywalker ... The second trilogy was to be about the rise of Luke Skywalker and the redemption of Anakin Skywalker ... The third trilogy was to be about the "other Skywalker" ... THAT is who Yoda was talking about when he said that in 1980. It is a little known fact that up until Lucas was trying to finish the script for ep VI Leia was NOT the "other Skywalker". He was at the duel between Vader and Luke where Luke was refusing to fight Vader. George couldn't come up with a reason for Luke to attack his father in a dark side fueled rage. He fixed this problem by making Leia the other Skywalker and having Vader threaten her. That one change had a few big time effects on the whole saga. First, most fans said eewww ... she kissed her brother on the lips ... twice. Second, it eliminated the third trilogy. That is the main reason why we will never see anything put out as ep 7 - 9 ... they don't exist anymore ... at least not in their original form. Third, it put a face and a name to the "other" that Yoda spoke of.
So in a nutshell, when the movie came out in 1980 Yoda's words of "there is another" ... were a reference to the third trilogy. In 1983 the meaning of those words were changed to mean that the "other" is Leia. Now it leads us to ask if Obi-Wan was actually watching very closely when Luke and Leia were born.
2. In Return Luke asks Leia if she remembers her mother, and she says she remembers her as being sad. Padme died at their birth, right, so how does she remember her mother?
Lucas has actually answered this question but you're right about the uproar. I run a Star Wars fan site and I remember how not only my message board but pretty much every Star Wars message board on the internet erupted in a single "WTF" George when the rumors came out that Padme died in ep III. We all, I would dare say you too, thought this to be a direct contradiction to the conversation that Luke and Leia had talking about their mother. Lucas saw the uproar, and I think he liked it because he let it go on for a while, he gave the reason for how it happened. Lucas said the "memories" that Leia had of her mother were Force generated memories. When asked why Luke didn't also have these "memories" he said it was because Luke was the "Warrior" of the two and that Leia was the "talker". I don't know how others felt about this but my response was ... Ok George, that kind of works ... it still SUCKS though ... lol ...
Some comments on the other answers:
The first one is a general question ... how come most people think that Padme dying of a "broken heart" is a cop out. Yes I understand she just gave birth to children and her first priority should be them but ... the love between Anakin & Padme was beyond epic ... it was one of those "you are the air I breathe" kind of loves that should last forever. It is the highest form of irony that Anakin becomes Darth Vader to save Padme's life but in becoming Darth Vader he actually is the cause of her death because he took away the one thing that she needed to live ... Anakin. Seeing the look in his eyes when she confronts him on Mustafar, how he doesn't deny killing the younglings and the other horrors that Obi-Wan says that he did but instead asks when she saw Obi-Wan. She sees the evil in his eyes when he says he is more powerful than Palpatine and that he can overthrow him so they can rule the galaxy together ... in these moments she knows that her "rock" is gone and then the ultimate betrayal when Anakin turns his anger towards her and tries to actually kill her right then and there. After knowing that she has lost almost everything she ever cared about dying of a broken heart would seem to be the only way her story could end. I agree that her maternal instincts should have kicked in but by then she was too far gone ... the whole thing sucks all the way around but in some ways it does fit.
Leia's Message to Obi-Wan: "General Kenobi, years ago you served my father in the Clone Wars now he begs you to help him in his struggle against the Empire. I regret that I'm not able to present my father's request in person but my ship has fallen under attack and I'm afraid my mission to bring you to Alderaan has failed ..." --before you ask, yes I did that from memory but I checked it against the movie to make sure it was right ... what can I say ... I'm a Star Wars geek ... lol ...
The questions about R2-D2 and C3PO can not be answered without using info from the prequels. C3PO isn't "holding out" on anyone ... if you remember, at the end of ep III Bail Organa has C3PO's memory wiped. R2 on the other hand ... now he is a sneaky little Astro-Mech ... lol ... he knows it ALL. If you read the books of the Star Wars EU (Expanded Universe) you'll see that R2 is finally forced to tell Luke and Leia what he knows. This happens in a books series tittled "The Dark Nest Trilogy". R2 has a whole bunch of videos that show many things about Padme and Anakin. It shows their confrontation on Mustafar and shows Anakin choking Padme ... he has some of the beginning of the duel between Anakin and Obi-Wan ... he has video of their births also ... he ends up showing most of what he has to Luke & Leia and it helps them to fill in the blanks in their pasts.
As for most of the other "questions" ... why didn't Vader recognize Tatoonie, or 3PO and all the others ... they can all be answered the same way ... in 1977 when ep IV was made none of the other stuff even existed yet ... hell most people thought the movie was going to be a flop which was one of the main reasons why Lucas started at ep IV. It really is the only one of the 6 movies that could have been a stand alone movie. By that I mean it had a beginning and an ending. If the movie had flopped nobody would ever have to know that there was 8 other movies that could be made.
Anyways, I hope my ramble helps and as always ...
May The Force Be With You ...

Why does Obi-Wan not remember R2-D2 or C3P0, why Darth Vader seem not to have a clue in a new Hope he is at his birth place of Tantoorine, or remeber his droids, he made C3P0. There are lots of oddities and questions. But I figure the movies are all spaced out three years. Star Wars 4 in 1977, 5 in 1980, and 6 in 83. Same with 1,2,3 all three years apart. There are bound to be a few memory lapses in there.
Plus, Yoda is 900 years old, you never really know the human lifespan in the series. So it could be as easy as they forgot. Is is a possibilty. Star Wars was complicated from a plot standpoint from all the episodes. But it could of maybe been that simple.

Luke was the only hope really.
Obi Wan was dead, Yoda was near the end of his life and the one person who could help, Leia, was off doing Rebel stuff with no idea about her heritage or lineage and had no control about the force. That's why it's understandable that Obi Wan didn't think she was a chance. They couldn't have trained her.
Plus, he didn't know Leia was the daughter. He knew she was from Alderaan but it was never said who her father was. Obi Wan was in the dark just as much as anyone else when it came to Leia so he could have thought she was dead. Leia said something like "you served my father during the clone wars" but Obi Wan never served Organa, and I don't recall Obi Wan being around when her last name was said. He didn't know of the connection.

I have often wondered this. OFTEN.
I believe that Leia is remembering her adoptive mother, not her birth mother. Her adoptive mother on Alderaan died when she was young as well, and was beautiful and also sad because, I believe, she was ill.
I hope that helps.
Of course Yoda has to remind Obi-Wan because they both feel Luke is going off to his death, and they think they might be able to train Leia then. Then she would be the only hope.
Edit:
You know, that kinda ticked me off too! She was always so strong, and physically she was fine then suddenly she died of a broken heart. Cheesy Lucas, cheesy! Booo!

Yeah, that whole thing bothered me too.
Physically Padme was fine, but she lost the will to live, right?
What is a better reason to live besides the babies?
And I agree - in death, Obiwan was so strong, so he had to have known who Leia was, or at least felt the force around her - and wouldn't Darth Vadar have felt that???
Too many questions.......
