I want to obtain a legal alias that is completely different from my current name.?

I have my legal name John Spencer, and I wish to obtain the alias of Scott Armstrong.

What are the legel procedures I would have to go through to do this? I have been searching for answers all morning and I have turned up "Just do it".

I am planning on moving out of the state to start a new life. The next step for me is to get a new name, but I still want the option to come home with my old name.

Where do I start and how do I do this?

I don't believe there is a legal way to have two separate ID's. you are either John Spencer or Scott Armstrong, but not both. you can adopt this new name and use it exclusively in your new life, however, your existing credit and all legal matters will still be under John Spencer.
