Spanish (Spain) or Spanish (Latin America). Which one would benefit me more to learn if moving to CA or NYC.

My native tongue is English (American). I plan to relocate to CA or NYC. My friends constantly tell me I need to learn Spanish. I'm just confused. Do I learn Spanish (Spain) or Spanish (Latin America).

    well, Im currently studying Spanish and am taking my final exams next year, I live in England so Im learing Castillian Spanish which is only spoken is Spain but trust me the only difference between Spanish spoken in Spain and Spanish spoken in Latin America is the accent and pronounciation of different words for example in Spain if you say thank you (gracius) you would say G-R-A-T-H-I-U-S- whereas in Latin America they would prounounce it the way it is written so it both the exact same language but with a different accent thats all, people get confused and think its two different languages but honestly, its not its just the 2 different accents so as you live in the United States its best to learn Spanish from Latin America as it would be easier for you as if you learn Castillian Spanish from Spain then you may find it hard to understand someone else when they are speaking Spanish because of the different accent, I have this Spanish teacher in my school from Latin America and her accent is different and I sometimes find it hard to understand her so its really up to you but because of where you live, learn the language they speak there

    Very similar minus some vocabulary and accent differences. Within Latin America though there are many different accents as well.

    Overall I would suggest Latin American Spanish, since it's the Spanish of many countries versus that of one country.

    doesn't matter. You pick up the accent of those around you, if you're going to pick up any. It's really all the same. You'll learn the minor words that matter as you go along.

    Car = coche = carro

    drive = conducir = manejar.

    It's the same language. And few teachers do much in the way of differentiating until fairly advanced levels, anyway.

    Latin American. It is much more widely spoken, especially in the United States.

    mine, latin american, mmmmm it's hard to explain, uhm for example, anime or series are translated for latin america with their own kind of spanish, but for spain there's another translation, you know, for us is kinda impossible to watch a video with spanish from spain ( for everyone in latinamerica) and spaniards can not hear latin american spanish as well.

    some diferences are the classic ones, vosotros v/s ustedes,

    (vosotros y ustedes have their own verb conjugation, like vosotros estais, ustedes estan) Z C S sounds, and vocabulary. they say for example HE LLEGADO TARDE/HE COMIDO RAPIDO in latin america we say Llegué tarde,comí rapido. etc etc etc etc etc

    here is an example ( one of them is american and the other is spanish, try to hear the difference)

    they're talking about shrek and even about latinamerican and spain spanish
